TENNIS COURT LIGHTING PACKAGE FOR CONDO
Outline of tennis court lighting
Outdoor tennis courts are common recreation facility provided by most of the condominium for the residents. It used to operate between 07.00pm to 10.30pm, thus a good lighting to maintain the illuminance over the line-marked area of the court and minimize the off-site effects would be essentially required in the design of the lighting profile.
Lighting fixture fitted with high intensity discharge lamp (such as high pressure sodium and metal halide) are commonly adopted for illuminating the line-marked area of the court. To maintain the adequate illuminance of recreation tennis court, a total luminous efficacy of approximately 300000 lumen would be essentially required, which is approximately equivalent to 8 units of 400W high pressure sodium lamps (HPS) or 12 units of 300W metal halide lamps mounting on 8-meter lamp poles.
Both HPS and metal halide are gas discharge lamp by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed inside a translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina arc tube. This tube is filled with both gas and metal salts. The internal gas pressure within the arc tube rises when it heats and evaporates the metal salts that forms a plasma which could be greatly increase the intensity of lights. More voltage is required to maintain the arc discharge consequential to higher power consumption. When the lamps are turn on and off frequently, it would be eventually raised to exceed the maximum voltage output by the electrical ballast thus resulting the arc fails. This phenomenon is a life cycling of the lamps that causes the high cost of maintenances. ES2330 is one of the high intensity LED luminaires being developed as an alternative for replacement of the traditional fixture fitted with HID lamps, which would be surmounting the problems that used to perturb the condo manager relating to operation cost control for outdoor tennis court. In response to the condo managers’ request, ES2330 tennis court lighting package is introduced for replacement of HID fixture. It is designed in accordance with Class III of EN12193-2007 sport lighting level recommendation for recreation and training.
ES2330 tennis court LED lighting package
The package comprises of 8 units of ES2330-200W200 200W LED luminaire with good modelling of key and fill light effect. The average illuminance on the principal playing area is however compatible with the traditional tennis court using HID fixture as light source.
The design of ES2330 package is basing on the following criterions:
- The illuminance should comply with Class III of EN12193-2007 for residential tennis court lighting code;
- The light source should be baffled to ensure that it is not directly visible from the habitable room window of an adjoining dwelling;
- The luminaires should be mounted to the light poles at the height of not exceeding 8 metres above the court surface;

Lighting profile
Most residential tennis courts are using low-mast configuration for mounting of lighting fixture. This would be producing low glare with 
good uniformity and reducing the light spillage.
There are two typical profile commonly adapted in condo tennis court. The 8-pole profile as shown in FIG. 2 where marked U may be fitted with either single mounting brackets for high wattage HID fixtures or multiple mounting brackets for low wattage fixtures. Some of the tennis court may provide only 4 lamp pole fitted with multiple mounting brackets as shown in FIG. 3.
ES2330 package could be adaptable for replacement of either 8-poles or 6-pole tennis court profile using the existing lamp poles. Single-fixture mounting bracket would be used for the 8-pole profile, whereas twin-fixture mounting bracket should be used for the 4-pole court.
