Look around you. There may be some things that surround you that could ignite a simple idea wherein you can base your venture from. Here are some suggestions on how to gather the right ideas to start a business.

1. Start from the heart

What makes you happy? What are the activities that you enjoy doing? What are the things that you cannot live without? Just by answering those questions, you could have some thoughts about how to start your dream business.

You have to remember that once you have taken the leap to open your own biz, you have to do everything to make it succeed. So you have to settle for the right idea that you can give sweet justice to. You have to settle for the one that you will also enjoy. This way, you will be passionate with your endeavor.

2. See other's ads

There are so many advertisements everywhere you go. You will be surprised to even see some at places where you least expect it. Ads are all around. They are on radio, TV, plastered on buses and trains. Ads come regularly at your email's inbox as well as in the form of letters or postcard mailing sent directly at your homes.

You can have your thoughts inspired by some of those ads. All you have to do is look and learn from what you see.

3. Learn from the trend

What do people crave for? This is actually a risky start because trends will not last. But you can do something about it. Start thinking of ways to make your business outlast the trend. You have to add some things to your biz to sustain people's interest long after newer trends have been introduced.

4. Look at your resources

How much are you willing to allocate for your business? Through this, you can start scouting ideas based from the money that you have on your hands. If you have just enough, you must budget it wisely.

Remember that you have to divide the funds accordingly. In starting up a biz, you must also start your promotion ventures. You've got to make people excited about it. You've got to make them look forward to your products and services.

5. Who are the people in your neighborhood?

This should also play an important role in your decision making. These are the people who will patronize your products. So you must think about them from the start. Study what are the things that they might be interested in availing.

There are more ways to get those business ideas flowing. You cannot be impulsive with your decision. But you have to start the sooner, the better. And once that biz is up and running about, you can then start scouting ideas, like postcard mailing, of how to promote what you have.

Here are some criteria for you to consider.

1. Is email used by the majority of your intended audience?

Unless many or most of your prospects use email on a regular basis, you probably will not want to develop a serious email marketing system. Conversely, if your intended audience is one of the many who make use of email on a daily basis, email marketing would likely work well for your business.

2. Your product is not an impulse decision.

While there are exceptions, generally where customers want to learn about the product or service, you have a good candidate for email marketing.

3. You have a free, sample, or trial version to give away free.

If you can offer a complimentary version product or service, email marketing will most definitely work for you. This is true for two reasons. First, the free offer encourages the prospect to overcome their reluctance to fill in their name and email address. Second, by giving them a free item, the prospect can take your company for a test drive with no risk.

You can easily discuss aspects of the free item in a series of follow up emails. Think about it...by receiving the free item, they are giving you a reason to follow up with them. Let's say you provided a free ten-page report. You can send out one email asking if they received the report, another summarizing the first section, and so on. You may also decide to simply chop up the report up and dole it out it in small chunks over the next seven, ten, or more days.

4. You have a stable of other similar services or products that they may want to buy.

Having a supply of other products or services, or a "back end", is a sound business strategy. Do you understand why? By the time your prospect has bought, you will have invested a considerable amount of money and effort to locateg your prospect and also compel him or her to buy from you. You can be sure that some of them will then choose to buy more, if only you allow them to. A few will be interested in everything you have to offer. Bottom line: your most rewarding sales, both in terms of ease of acquiring it, customer satisfaction, and opportunity for referrals, are those you make to existing customers. It's not hard to grasp the reason: they quite simply want what you have to offer and they believe you will provide it.

Let's suppose you are selling an ebook or report on how to get started in the dog training business. In addition to that product, you could also sell a workbook complete with checklists, a teleseminar series, a coaching program, and a certification program.

Any type of business can make good use of email marketing.
