[F162]Fences Make Good Neighbors
by Badeth V. Abonita, Bad

Fences play a significant role in protecting your home and property. If you hadn't had fences, there could have been disputes over your neighborhood's pet or property line. Worst case is that your home could be more vulnerable to thieves who might barge into your home at night.

Why should we build fences?

Throughout history, fencing has been constructed for security and property issues. For example, early American settlers claimed their land by simply fencing it in. In United Kingdom, fences served as boundary. Fences were two adjacent plots that divide properties from the other.

The utmost reason for building fences is to set boundaries. Aside from papers and legal documents, one could easily claim his property rights from the fences it demarcate. You could easily sue trespassers and illegal tenants if you have fences on your property.

Privacy is one of your greatest possessions. No one ever wanted to be meddle through their private life. You're not in Big Brother's House to be publicly viewed, thus, you wouldn't want your neighbor to hear or see your private affairs. If you wish to sun-bathe in your private pool, fences can protect you from prying eyes.

Fences are also constructed to add beauty to your garden. Various fencing styles make your garden attractive and appealing. It also supports climbing plants such as vines.

If you and your neighbor wrangle over a filthy dog from eating your plants, fences keep these pets away. It also prevents unwanted animals from visiting your farm and garden

Thus, I therefore conclude, fence functions to demarcate property lines, to gain privacy, to add charm in your yard and to “make good neighbors.”

Fencing preparation

You should prepare things to construct a durable fence. The first step you must do is to know the particular boundary of your property, where the fence will be installed. Have your land surveyed or check local zoning and building codes so you won't be penalize by someone for violating the property rights.

Kinds of fences

Having enumerated the importance of building fences and the preparation, the second step you should keep in mind when planning to install fences in your backyard is to determine kind of fence you will use.

There are different kinds of fences constructed for its respective purpose, check them as follows:

Privacy fences—Literally, this kind of fencing aims to protect ones' privacy. Fencing solutions that can be used are picket fence or affordable vinyl fence.

Decorative Fence—This is often used in landscaping. One example, you can add a touch of style when you build a pool fence. Garden fencing aims to give a different ambiance and used to protect plantings from wildlife to providing structural support for both soil and crops.

Boundary Fences—This is used to demarcate property or to restrict a boundary. Ranch fence is a common boundary fencing.

Do you have good boundaries? Do you clearly know the limit or edge that defines you as separate from others? Your skin marks the limit of your physical self, however, there are other boundaries that extend well beyond your skin. You become aware of those when someone stands too close, don't you? That's when someone comes inside that invisible circle known as your comfort zone.

Boundaries can be somewhat flexible. It may be fine for your lover to stand much closer to you than most of your friends. A friend can stand closer than a stranger. When someone is angry or hostile towards you, you might want to keep quite a distance from him or her!

There are other kinds of boundaries--emotional, spiritual, sexual and relational. You know the limits of what feels safe and appropriate for you. Do you maintain good boundaries that keep you feeling safe? Emotional boundaries, for example, honor the set of feelings and reactions that are distinctly yours.

You respond to the world uniquely based on your perceptions, your history, your values, goals and concerns. You can find people who react to the world in similar ways to you, but no one will react precisely as you do in all ways. That is your uniqueness.

Your spiritual boundaries are set when you know the right spiritual path for yourself. If someone tries to tell you that their truth is a little more true than yours, you can draw the line. There is so much in the news about violence and sexual aggression. Sexual boundaries must be clear. You, and only you, choose with whom you interact sexually--and the extent of that interaction. All relationships that are healthy have boundaries that are respected. The roles you play in each relationship need to come with clear limits of what you consider to be appropriate and healthy interaction.

Boundaries bring your life into order. Holding your boundaries exercises your right to define yourself and your relationships to
others. You teach people how to treat you and you are 100% responsible for doing so. Are you taking good care of yourself?

Can you clearly tell another person where your boundaries are and what the consequences of crossing them are in ways that move the relationships forward? Sometimes that movement forward will strengthen your bond, sometimes it will end it. Clarity is up to you. You teach people how to treat you!
