[F194]Filing For Income Taxes
by Robert Bain, Rob
Come April 15th you should already have your tax return submitted. This is often something people don't look forward to but it has to be done. You can make the task easier by being prepared. With some easy changes you can have all you need ready by the deadline without having to scour around for it.

Keep a file to put items for your tax return in all year long. Even a large envelope can help you keep things in order. Put in receipts for donations and other items so you know where they are at the end of the year. It also prevents you from forgetting about things you can use as a deduction on your return.

There are new deductions being added all the time so try to stay on top of them. The forms are all designed to walk you though what you may be eligible for. There are specific notes on the workbooks that even tell you the eligibility criteria and what forms to use to take such deductions. You want to do all you can to lower the amount of tax you owe but you also want to do it legally.

Don't wait until the last minute to file your tax return either. You may get started and realize you are missing something. Preparing the return early gives you adequate time to collect what you may be missing. If you are pressing the deadline you may find you can't get the information you need in the little bit of time you have left.

You can complete your own tax returns using paper forms. You can also use a software program that walks you through the process. If you don't fee confident you can take your information to a tax preparer. They have trained professionals that can handle any type of tax situation.

Make sure you look over the details of your tax return before you sign and submit them. Verify the amounts of W-2's and 1099's are accurate. Even if you don't get some type of verification for the income you earned you need to be honest and claim it on your tax return.

Some people put off filing their income tax because they owe money. If you do and you can pay it in full then do so. If you can't cover the amount due file your return anyway. Contact the IRS to see how they can work with you on the payments. They try to offer an option for every situation but you won't know until you look into it.

Should you be lucky enough to get a refund check then think hard about how it can benefit you the most. You may really want new furniture or to take a vacation. Yet you may have a pile of debt that could use a huge shovel scoop of it removed. Be responsible with your tax return and do what will be best for your entire family.
