[E219]Employee Workplace Privacy Rights
by Marti Kougel, Mar
Within the United States there are a number of topics being discussed and one of those include the right to privacy. This is indeed a touchy subject in light of the 9-11 attacks. There is a struggle in finding the right balance in personal right and public safety.
Most people feel that too much information is an invasion on their rights and is considered morally wrong and unconstitutional. Keep in mind that until 9-11 happened, the United States had not been a subject to terrorism like other countries have.
Ever since September 11 Americans now feel a false sense of security and now has concern whether the enemy is some place far and away in another country or just right down the street from you.
Since then the government has taken on more responsibility in protecting Americans. Some of these measures include the saying of " by any means necessary " approach . This will include but not limited to such things as listening in to phone calls, reading E-mails and such.
This is where it becomes a touchy subject though. When a terrorism plot is averted such as the bombings in Britain because the individuals were stopped because of police monitoring their phone calls. You have the situation where innocent people have had their privacy invaded even though they were of no threat to national security.
You also have these same issues facing us at a workplace where Corporations and employees struggle with privacy issues. Where companies are seeking to protect themselves from legal and financial exposure cause by actions of its employees. As politicians, voters and special interest groups debate these constitutional issues, employees and employers try to understand these rules of engagement within business.
Maybe all of this one day will fall just in line with the things that we have gotten accustomed to do in our lives such as security cameras, electronic tracking and internet use.
