Social class became less defined as members of the high society and working class both bought whatever type of clothing they wanted. In particular, the new generation took advantage of the benefits of the booming consumer society. Europe had become used to especially those made by American designers. With increasing costs needed for the manufacture of handmade fashion, ready-to-wear clothes became more viable. New technologies likewise enabled manufacturers to make good quality clothes.

Parisian haute couture tried to defend itself against the threat of factory-made clothes and accessories. They however failed to do so because fashion was soon going into the streets, making itself available even to the common man. During this time the old world was slowly fading out. Changes in the fashion industry were one of the more compelling manifestations in the transformation in society. There were now more choices for men and , and they were no longer limited to going to the couturier. Manufacture of clothes by couturiers proved to be far longer, which made it less popular among the general public. By this time, couture had lost its hold in the industry.
