[F18]Facts About Oregon Trail
by Leonard Holmes, Leo
Osteoarthritis is a long-term disease that usually affects several joints in the body. Any joint can be affected, but the knees, hips, hands and the upper and lower back are the most common sites for arthritis pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the elderly. It is sometimes known as degenerative joint disease (or, in the back, degenerative disc disease(DDD). Persons with osteoarthritis often experience joint stiffness, swelling, and pain.

Osteoarthritis is believed to be caused by friction acting on the joints over time. Genetic factors. prior injuries, and a history of heavy physical labor or contact sports all seem to contribute to the development of the disease. Osteoarthritis is the most frequent cause of disability in older adults. Osteoarthritis is not an auto-immune condition like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Redness and heat usually do not accompany the joint pain and swelling.

Moist heat can relieve joint pain, but in some cases cold packs are preferred. Heat is thought to increase blood flow to the area, while cold decreases the blood flow to the area. Patients often try both approaches to see what works best for them. In some cases night time splinting is used to allow the joints and muscles to rest in a normal position while sleeping to help decrease the risk of the joint stiffening into a position that won't move.

Arthritis treatment is aimed at increasing comfort and flexibility. Low impact exercise programs keep joints flexible. Exercise needs to be done in moderation and with the advice of a physician. Exercise can also elevate mood, decrease pain (over time) and improve memory. It helps you maintain a healthy weight, and being overweight puts extra strain on arthritic joints. Flexibility exercises such as Tai chi and yoga can also help the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are sometimes used to reduce pain and decrease swelling. NSAIDs include the over the counter drugs naproxen and ibuprofen and other drugs prescribed by a doctor. Some patients report that glucosamine and MSM (available over the counter) helps decrease pain and improve joint functioning over time. Some research supports this.

Doctors may inject corticosteroids into joints to give several months of pain relief and improved mobility. These medications can have side effects, and cortisone injections are usually not recommended to be given more frequently than once every few months.

Holistic treatments such as acupuncture and massage give relief to some. Acupuncture is thought by Eastern thinkers to unblock the flow of "chi" (vital energy) in the body. Western scientists have a different theory, but studies show that it can be effective in relieving pain. Massage has also been shown to relieve the pain of arthritis. Physical therapists have other treatment modalities that benefit some patients.

Stronger pain medications, such as narcotics, are sometimes used when there is severe pain accompanying the arthritis. Other pain management approaches can also be helpful, including biofeedback, relaxation and hypnosis.

Joint replacement surgery is used when the joints have degenerated to the point that the person has difficulty getting around. The goal of surgery is to decrease the pain and disability allowing the patient to improve their mobility. Less radical surgery is sometimes used to correct problems in arthritic joints. As we most of us will develop some osteoarthritis. A patient with osteoarthritis will likely have some pain for the rest of his or her life. The goal is usually to help them have a good life anyway ? even though they have some pain.

It is important to know that respirators are only to be used when administrative or engineering controls are technically not feasible, when controls in engineering are currently being repaired or when there are any emergencies or situations that could not be immediately resolved.

Contaminants in the air that contribute as a hazard to one's respiratory health include mists, dusts, gases, fumes as well as atmospheres that are deficient in oxygen.

One way to control such situations is by designing a well maintained ventilation system, appropriate use of equipments for processing, the substitution of materials that are less hazardous.

Also, well controlled administrative procedures that are properly in place help limit the possible exposure of workers in areas that are contaminated. Having work hours that are reduced help prevent further contamination. However, such measures may also prove to be limited since the actual hazards are not really removed. This is the reason why administrative measures to control contaminants are generally not favored because such methods are usually difficult to maintain and are a bit unreliable.

But first, it is best that employers possess a program that provides a description as well as procedures on how to select and operate a respiratory equipment. Such details should be part of a complete program on respiratory protection not just a respirator, since the latter is basically useless unless a valid program is in place.

Components of an authentic respiratory program include the following: assessment of exposure, a program for training, keeping records and inspection, appropriate respirator storage, surveillance of health, evaluation of the respirator program. Also, the operating standard procedures should also be available in writing.

Part of a comprehensive respiratory program are physicians that are able to examine the fitness – both psychological and medical – of the workers. This process should be completed prior to such workers being assigned to areas wherein the use of respirators are required. It is important that workers are fit physically while working, this while they are wearing respiratory gears.
Such equipments when worn should also be comfortable.

It is important that workers with sideburns that are long, or those who have beards or hair stubbles not wear any respiratory gears since such facial hairs could cause breakage on the seal in between the mask and the skin. Also, eyeglasses should also be avoided as this would also break the seal. This basically means that a leakage may occur on the mask therefore the necessary protection will most likely not be provided. A worker who happen to have acne or any scars on the face may make any mask worn to be not as good compared to one who have no skin problems.

There are basically two kinds of respirators. One is a respirator that purifies the air, while another is a respirator that is supplied with air.

The first basically removes any contaminants on the air that is breathed via its filtering of any dust, mists or metal fume particulates. There are also other air purifiers that absorb such particulates and trap these I canisters.

Meanwhile, the air respirators that are supplied clean the air using an air tank that is compressed.

All in all, respirators do well in keeping the air clean and breathable. The appropriate selection of such an equipment especially in hazardous areas that have unclean air is very important.
