[L587]Loss Prevention Investigator Jobs
by Lyle Cochran, Lyl

By creating multiple partitions, the operating system can be installed on it's own primary partition, allowing user created data to be saved on another partition. When the operating system crashes or becomes corrupt, data saved to logical drive partitions are not affected. If needed, the primary partition containing the operating system can be formatted or the OS reinstalled without the loss of saved data.

Drawbacks to the multiple partition strategy:

As we all know, the Windows operating system automatically saves files to the C: drive, leaving the user with the responsibility of making sure their files are saved on a separate partition. Let's face facts. Unless a file is saved to the Windows Desktop folder the average user will not be able to find it. The Windows default path for a users documents and settings can be changed to another drive partition but that does not cure the problem since user installed programs save to the C: drive by default. In reality, the multiple partition strategy only works with advanced users who are not too lazy to save their work in a safe place.

What is an advanced user?

Until recently my idea of an advanced Windows user was a user who had a great deal of knowledge about the inner workings of computer hardware and software. To become more in line with the PC industry definition of an “Advanced User” I have redefined my definition of an advanced user. An advanced user can be determined by answering one simple question; Does the user understand the file system? A Windows user is advanced if she/he can save a file to a specific folder and then find that file with Windows Explorer. Finding a file with the application that created it does not count.

The multiple partition strategy works great for advanced users and gives technicians some peace of mind. Average users on the other hand, require other more hands on alternatives such as backup scheduling. Unless a technician wants to visit a customer on a regular basis to do periodic maintenance an auto backup schedule should be implemented. It is not wise to leave the data backup task in the hands of an average user for many reasons.

Creating a Strategy:

To create your own strategy take into consideration how the PC will be used and the skill level of the intended users and the hardware available. Try to set up automatic backups using Windows Task Manager or 3rd party backup software if users are average or new to computers. You might also consider a CD or DVD backup strategy. An online backup service is a good choice for users with a broadband internet connection. No matter what strategy you use, make backups as easy and simple as possible. The more hands free your backup strategy is, the more likely you will avoid data loss.

We are often reminded about the importance of backing up our data and I am not immune to procrastination. To stress the importance of making backups, keep this in mind. Your hard disk will fail, sooner or later, are you ready?

There are many loss prevention equipment alternatives that can help make property monitoring easy for you. It is important to understand all of the options available to determine what will best meet your needs.

Security Tags - Most commonly used in retail stores, these tags, or Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) devices are placed on merchandise to detect when someone has not paid for an item. A special tool must be used to remove the tags and are monitored using a security gate that detects whether the tag had been removed or not. Some tags contain ink that is dispensed when they are tampered with by people trying to remove them on their own.

Security Cameras - Closed-circuit cameras can be used outside and inside your home or in retail stores to monitor movement and activity. Most of these systems can be easily installed without an electrician's expertise and many are even wireless. Displaying the camera in areas that are obvious may help deter crime, but also be aware that some people view these as a challenges and may deface or break them to prevent them from monitoring. You can also place a camera in an inconspicuous area to avoid this issue, but they may not be visible by the people you want to know that they are being monitored. Also be aware that you can purchase fake cameras that may not actually monitor activity, but seemly seem to be doing so. The only caution to this method is that you are not able to capture movement should it occur.

Mirrors - You can place convex mirrors around corners of your home or store or down retail aisles that you cannot see from certain locations, or blind spots. These are often mounted on ceiling and walls to offer an alternate viewing area.

Counterfeit Detection Devices - There are many small gadgets that store owners can use to detect fraudulent money for purchases in a store. You can utilize florescent ultraviolet lights, magnets and chemical solutions that validate the authenticity of money that is being used to purchase merchandise. They are simple enough to not interrupt service as they are being done by a cashier yet are often preventive in getting money that your bank will not honor long after the merchandise has left the store.

Locks and Alarms - These can be placed on any door, window or garage. You can place them easily on certain display cabinets within your store. Locks can prevent easy opening while alarms are great indicators that something has been wrongfully tampered with.

Signs - You can make people aware that they are being monitored by placing signs where they can see them. While this may only help deter criminal activity, they are a very low cost method to try to prevent crime from occurring.

Dummy Domes - These domes do not actually contain any form of camera equipment but appear to have one in them. They are often strategically placed at a particular place and can also be used as a deterrent to shoplifting.

Ceiling Mirrors - This type of mirror is often used in convenient stores and allows loss prevention specialists to monitor high theft areas.

Whichever devices you choose for protecting your assets, these loss prevention equipment alternatives will help you to monitor your property easily and efficiently. Weigh these options to determine what is best for your needs.
