When you start learning your making skills maybe the best way to start is to make new jewellery from old. Begin your new hobby by starting by starting to by restringing old and unfashionable necklaces. Some of the best pieces of handmade jewellery that I have created have been made from beads that I have taken from old and broken pieces of jewellery.
Before you start your projects you are going to have to source your materials. The best places to do this are places like charity shops and getting up early at the weekend to go and treasure hunt at car boot sales. You can come across many finds at places like antique shops, market stalls, and charity shops and don't forget to keep looking in the local press for when there are local fetes and jumble sales. All of these places are great places to find beautiful and interesting pieces of jewellery that people have no more need of. Also you can ask family and friends if they have any jewellery pieces that they no longer wear as most people have things tucked in the back of a drawer that they do not use anymore.
Restringing necklaces is the best way to start with new jewellery projects. You will have to start by deciding the type of thread that you will use and this will depend on the type of beads you are using. Silk is the traditional thread that is used when stringing beads and this can also be used when stringing some . When you are using heaver beads like porcelain and metal beads you are better using tiger tail which is many strands of fine wire that has been twisted and coated in plastic. This is available in different widths depending on the size of the holes in the beads. If you are designing ethnic designs you are probably using beads that are made from wood, clay, bone or plastic. The holes in these beads may allow you to use waxed cotton, leather or suede to thread the beads onto.
If your jewellery project is to make a pair of then you will need headpins and ear hooks and some small metal or matching or contrasting roccaille beads. The small beads are because you will find that the holes in most beads are too big for the head pins and you will need these small beads to stop the other beads falling off.
Whichever jewellery project you choose I am sure that you will have lots of fun in choosing your beads and designing your jewellery. You will be able to make pieces to match and contrast you outfits and be able to make presents and gifts for your family and friends. Take your time and take inspiration from all the many different styles and designs that can be seen in the shops and in many magazines.
Garages are notorious for getting out of control. Most garages in your neighborhood would look completely chaotic right now if you entered them. Why is this true? Most people do not spend much quality time in their garages, so their investment in keeping them clean and free of clutter is not very high. Also, garages tend to become the storage space for all a household's miscellaneous junk. But it does not have to be that way. All you need is a system of organization and a desire to keep things organized over time. Once a great and practical organization system is in place, it will not let you down.
How do you clean up your garage? Short of gutting it and starting over with a general contractor and a dumpster, there is still a lot you can do. You can even turn a small storage space into an expansive one with just a few small investments. Garages can always hold way more stuff than you realize, especially if your things are arranged in a meticulous fashion.
Before you organize your garage, take a good, long, and hard look at it. Do you need everything you see? It might be time to have a garage sale in order to rid yourself and your family of some little-needed junk. Do not be afraid to throw stuff away either. There are also websites devoted to people trading and giving away their old unwanted items. It is a clich, but one man's trash is another man's treasure. Once you have whittled your garage's collection down to its essentials, then it is time to start organizing.
Do you have large items in your garage like surfboards or boogie boards for summer beach trips? Consider sticking them overhead in the rafters, if you have them. Do you have bicycles that are taking up a lot of floor space? Consider mounting them on special bike hooks on the wall of the garage. If you have a workbench that is crowded with tools and toolboxes, then put up a pegboard for all your hammers, screwdrivers, and other miscellany. Next, consider shelving. If you do not want to invest in utility shelves, even though the metal versions can be fairly inexpensive when purchased from a home improvement store, then you can make your own and kill two birds with one stone in the process. Remember all those concrete blocks and scrap pieces of lumber piled up in the corner of the garage? Well you can combine cleaning and organizing by constructing simple shelves out of them. You can place boxes on the shelves, or old pairs of ski boots. This will free up a lot of floor space, while piling the walls high with organized items that are easy to find in a pinch. Never again will you have to stumble over piles of junk for hours to find the thing that you were looking for. A clean garage also discourages small animals from setting up shop under piles of junk and rubble.
