[M188]Making Own Wedding Cake
by Pat Lock, Pat

After the wedding dress, probably the wedding cake is one aspect of the wedding to which the bride gives most thought. And yet it is often left to others to make important decisions about the cake.

Hours will have been spent discussing the size and shape of the cake, and dozens of different designs looked at. But think about how the cake will be displayed at the wedding reception – a magnificent cake which has taken weeks to decorate can sometimes scarcely be seen.

In the past wedding cakes were always placed on the main table, right in front of the bride and groom. This gave the guests a good view of the cake, but many of them could hardly see the happy couple!

Although it is usual for the bride to cut the cake at the end of the meal, there is an alternative solution. If the cake is displayed in the reception area (where the bride and groom mingle with guests after their wedding ceremony) rather than in the room where the meal takes place, there are some advantages. Firstly, it gives guests time and space to have a close look at the cake. And, if the bride cuts the cake at this stage, the caterers have more time to slice it into sections, before handing it out after the meal.

Always make sure that the tablecloth on which the wedding cake stands is smooth. So many photographs show a beautiful cake standing on a crumpled cloth! Photographs of the cake will show up well if the table is against a plain background. Make sure the table is firm, large enough, and not likely to move if knocked.

Banqueting cloth is a stiff embossed paper, ideal for covering wedding tables, and can be pinned in place – making sure the material reaches the floor. Swathes of soft material draped around the table always looks pretty. Choose a colour that blends in both with the cake, and with the general colour scheme.

Cakes always have more impact when they are raised from the surface. White, silver or gold stands can be hired. The shape of the stand should reflect the shape of the cake - a round stand for round cake. If costs have to be kept to a minimum, there is often something around the house that can be used. Or failing that, position plate under (and slightly smaller than) the cake board. The space beneath the board makes the cake appear larger.

Lighting is another important feature. The ideal solution is to have spotlights directed on the cake. Failing this if electric points are close (and the leads can be hidden) perhaps a hidden table light can be used to.

Depending upon the design of the wedding cake, decorating the table with flowers can give it an added attraction. A garland of fresh flowers around the table may look beautiful, but would use dozens of flowers and take some time to make. Consider bunches of flowers at intervals – perhaps positioned at the top of a drape. Or curves of greenery around the table. Ivy is pretty, especially the variegated type, but unless using small lengths, the leaves are often sparse. Sprays of the small leaved bush,

Every couple wants their wedding day to be perfect. Unfortunately, that's a tall order, and at least a few things may go wrong. If that happens there is always a way to keep things flowing smoothly. The key is to stay calm and collected, and stay with the plan. The day belongs to the bride and groom, and whatever they want should rule the day.

It is important to chalk out your preferences, likes and dislikes before planning out the final details of your wedding. You would really have to be sure on what you want before you start making those final decisions that many times can't be reversed. Decide on these important 'must' have details with your fiance, talk about the budget with him/her and stick to the plans and decisions you take.

Your first decision will be the wedding date. If the ceremony will take place in a church or some other heavily used building, confirm that the date is available. If it isn't you'll have to settle on another, so it's a good plan to have several possibilities when you are ready to book.

You'll need to plan your budget carefully. Use common sense when choosing some things for your wedding. Where possible think of ways where you can cut costs. For instance, if you want to hire a DJ to handle the music at your reception you might want to ask around to see if you know anyone who can do this for you at a low price.

When you start buying the things that you need for your wedding use a list that includes all costs and items that you need and make sure that you stick to it. Contact merchants in your area that offer the services that you need and see if you can negotiate a better price. After all, it never hurts to try.

Choosing the photographer for your wedding is one of the most important decisions that you'll make since your photos, like your memories, will last a life time. Take your time looking for the right photographer before making your final decision. Ask to see plenty of samples so that you can see the range of photos that the photographer can take. You want to be certain that the pictures that you want are possible.

The next important issue you want to decide on is the number of people you want to invite to your wedding function. Be realistic and remain within your budget while counting heads for sending the invite. If your budget is tight then there is no point in having a huge guest list, so you will have to cut down on some names and limit only to those close family members and friends who are important to you.

Once you know the final head count of guests to your wedding you'll need to find a caterer that is within your budget and that is going to serve that foods that you want to have at your wedding. Be careful not to settle for a caterer based just on the cost.

As you plan your wedding, you'll find that there's more to think about than you imagined. Since it could be easy to forget something, ask for some help. Have your bridesmaid or family member help you plan so that you'll include everything you want. It can also be helpful to have someone else help you with various decisions. One example is what type of music you want at the reception.

Above all you must enjoy the planning and the execution of one of the most special days of your life. Enjoy!
