FMEA stands for Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. Not that FMEA analysis has much to do with CNC, but you might come across it in your CAD studies. I will cover FMEA very briefly here. FMEA has really risen to power and prominence over the last few years because of software advancements and computing power increases. To sum up FMEA quickly, you are trying to find where and why some thing would fail or break before it actually does.
FMEA is a risk assessment technique for identifying possible failures in a system, part, assembly, process, etc. The Failure Mode part of FMEA are the ways, or modes, in which something might fail. Failures are any errors or defects that can be potential or actual. The Effects analysis of FMEA refers to studying the consequences of those failures.
CAD Software Price Points
I consider there to be a few different price points in the CAD Software Market. These can be categorized as hobby or professional price points. This is usually a good break as well in the features a program offers. Here is a quick run down.
Hobby CAD Software
Could possibly be free
$0-$500 price point
Could be 2D, 2.5D or 3D capable, usually 2D or 2.5D
Stand alone licenses
Meant for ease of user interface
Probably missing some advanced tools
Professional CAD Software
$500-$10,000 price point
2D, 2.5D and 3D capable
Network version that let multiple designers interact
Different modules or plug-ins like FMEA
Full featured, most every type of tool is available
Examples of Commercial CAD Software Programs
AutoCAD
Turbo CAD
IntelliCAD
Pro/Engineer
CAD Pro
Alibris
Solidworks
QuickCAD
Rhino3D
Before you buy you should really check out all the options. There are many types of software and each one is a bit different. You need to look over the advantages and disadvantages and then make the tough call.
I was planning to re-panel the eating area in my kitchen. I have darker color cabinets; that look like something out of the 1970's. The cabinets come up to a wall that acts as a divider from the eating area. It only extends out as far as the base cabinet. Because of the smaller selection of paneling styles, I was unable to find a darker paneling to match the cabinets. I was attracted to a pecan wainscot that could go beneath the cabinet wall divider; the problem is that it did not match my existing darker cabinets. I thought how or where do I make the break from the dark colors to the lighter pecan color. The pecan had a modern flair to it, with a slight distressed look that came through in dark lines that were sparsely spread throughout the pattern. It was a great new look and at this point I had a big decision to make.
I decided to go for new kitchen cabinets, but was afraid of the high prices that come with this home improvement product. I had shopped around and was surprised at how much you can spend on kitchen cabinets. After going from local store to big box retailer, I decided to see what was online in the way of kitchen cabinets. I had found my dream paneling and now I needed a kitchen cabinet match that was not going to cost five thousand dollars. Before I left one of the local supply stores, a helpful store worker mentioned that I look into a type of kitchen and bathroom cabinet known as RTA cabinets. He explained that they are ready to assemble cabinets. These cabinets are less expensive and in some cases a better quality than pre assembled cabinets. I thought it was a long shot, but I would do a google search for these RTA kitchen cabinets.
What I found astounded me. There is another world of kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities out there. I quickly breezed through numerous websites and found a wide range. After I checked a few sites I came back to one of the first ones on the search. It was easily the best pricing, but more exciting was the fact that it had this type of cabinet called "Windsor". It is a standard name, but it was the match I was looking for. This Windsor cabinet had the stressed dark lines, the nicely tanned wood, and most of all -- the modern look that my kitchen needed. I compared pricing with a few sites and found a great disparity. So please note, check the sites and the gimmicks some of these sites try to pull, a good site will give you shipping and all other information up front.
In the end I got rid of the dark old cabinets, achieved a modern look, and because of RTA cabinets, I saved roughly 35% off of retail cabinets. So when looking for kitchen cabinets feel free to look at your local stores, but then go online and compare RTA kitchen cabinet prices. It is a big difference in price and quality, but it is a difference that is in your favor.
