[M62]Make A Viral Video
by Paul Fitzgerald, Pau
So, you have posted an amazing ad campaign video on the net a few weeks ago but still you are not getting your target number of views. And it is getting quite frustrating. You start to recount the things you did: Create a video with great content that you are sure will attract hundreds and thousands of viewers. You also, put in a keyword loaded description, and all the Meta tags you can come up with. Copies of the videos are posted on various free video hosting sites, yet nothing. What did you miss?

Well, for one thing, you missed social media optimization. In video marketing, SMO is the key. Gone are the days when you simply have to post a great 15-30 second video and expect web users to easily stumble upon it. Nowadays, there are literally hundreds to thousands of videos that are uploaded into a video hosting site such as YouTube or Daily Motion. There are so many video hosting sites so multiply the thousands to the various video sites, therefore, there are probably millions of videos that are uploaded in the web everyday. That is the number of videos which your video has to compete with. Thus, more effort is actually required of you.

First, let me give you a few tips on how to make a great ad video. Usually, 15 to 30 second video is long enough for an Internet ad. Web users are prone to get bored if the ad is too long. And for that same reason, it is important not to make your ad campaign too obvious. Be creative- if a video seems like an obvious ad, viewers won't appreciate it and will likely ignore it. That's bad since part of your goal is to encourage viewers to share your video. Make videos that are enticing. Perhaps you can come up with a big script and divide it into several videos of around 15 to 30 seconds. This will definitely kindle the viewers' curiosity that will make them search for more of your videos. And if you're getting really desperate, you can simply hire an attractive woman to appear in your video.

Now, lets say your equipped with a good video that will surely attract attention, still it will be drowned by many others. So, you have to do a little more follow-up work- Social Media Optimization. Blogs and forums are actually ideal venues for the publicity of your video. You can probably pay bloggers to post your embedded videos in their blogs. Mind you, blogs are one of the latest trends in Internet marketing and advertising.

Then, perhaps you can create accounts and start new threads in various forums where you can embed your video. Forums are also one of the great venues for site publicity. Also, some community sites, such as Myspace and Multiply allow members to embed videos in the comments section. You might as well take advantage of that. And most especially, don't forget to share your videos with your friends and encourage them to share the videos with other people.

Now that you have a good idea how to make your video extremely viral, make it work- work- work!

YouTube.com has grown rapidly in popularity, reaching currently the 16th most visited website according to Alexa, and it has only been around for just over a year.

For those of you who don't know what YouTube.com is, I'll give you an explanation. It's the top viral video site online, allowing anyone to post a video that they created. YouTube has a built in viral aspect, so that after you watch a video you like, you can immediately email it to your friends, blog it, save it to your favorites, or add it to groups.

This means that anyone can create a video, submit it to YouTube, and if people like what they see, you'll soon have your video spread virally all across the web to viewers everywhere.

So are you ready to make a viral video?

If so, then you'll need to keep a few things in mind. If you're doing it for marketing reasons, then you'll need to get your marketing message across clearly so that it's effective. If you want people to visit your website, then make sure your website URL is displayed in the video where people can see it, and make it an easy url to remember. It is usually most effective to have a "call to action" either as an invitation to visit your website, or perhaps even a more detailed request of what the viewer should do.

Creating a video that appeals to your target audience is key. Remember that you want people to share the video with their friends, so you have to add an aspect that gives it enough of an impact on the viewer that they'll choose to spread it virally.

The best ways to make your video viral, is to show something that is either newsworthy, extremely funny, outrageous, extraordinary, and perhaps even taboo.

It will take a bit of creativity, but if you just go to YouTube and watch some of the highest rated videos, then you'll get a good idea of what you're trying to emulate to make your video viral.

One more thing to remember, is to make sure you can easily link your marketing message to your video. If you make a really funny video that is super viral, but totally unrelated to the website you display at the end, then you're not going to do too well. Sure you may have succeeded in creating a viral video, but you've failed in expressing your marketing message effectively. You can go out of the boundaries of your marketing message a little bit, but you need to have a firm link to your marketing message that makes your video appeal to your target market and make them want to know more.
