[M41]Make A Diaper Baby
by Jody Olsen, Jod
Babies are so wiggly that you almost need an extra set of hands, so it is essential to have everything handy before you start. Here are the 5 most important things you need to make this busy task quicker and easier!

1)A Clean Place to Change Baby
You need a clean safe place for baby to lie on while you diaper him. It could be as simple as a blanket on the floor or an actual changing table. Be sure to strap baby onto the table and/or always have a hand and both eyes on him?even tiny babies are quick! Changing stations in malls and restaurants are convenient?just be sure to clean it and put down a blanket or changing pad before use. Always wash your hands before and after diapering. Be sure to have small toys available to keep your baby busy and less wiggly.

2)Lots and Lots of Diapers
Diapers come in many shapes, sizes and fashion statements. Whether you choose cloth or disposable, it is important to find a size and shape that fits your baby comfortably. It should fit snug to contain everything but leave room for baby to move. You also need to consider how absorbent the diaper is to determine how often you need to change baby so he will stay dry and happy. If you use cloth diapers make sure to use a detergent that is gentle to baby's skin.

3)Wipes to Take Care of Business
There is a vast array of baby wipes on the market, scented and unscented, chemical free, some with emollients and so on. Basically you need a cloth that will clean baby's bottom well without irritating it. There are many ?recipes? for making your own wipes that are gentle and cost effective too. In a pinch a warm washcloth will do the job nicely!

4)Contain the Mess
It is important to have a place to dispose of the soiled diaper. If you are out and about, it is polite and sanitary to put baby's diaper in a plastic bag before placing in a garbage can. If you are at home you may want to consider a diaper pail with a liner to keep your house smelling clean and fresh.

5)Goops and Gobs
If baby does not have a diaper rash, there is no need to use creams. If irritation is present, wash with warm water, dry well and apply a thin coat of your favorite cream. If the rash persists, call you health care provider as baby may need a medicated cream. Never use powder with talc as it is dangerous to your baby's lungs.

For your baby's first few years you will change his diaper more times than you can count. Being prepared will help diapering go much smoother and allow you to play and interact with baby while you do it. Happy Diapering!
