[G268]Gifts To Family Members
by Albert James, Alb
The search for the perfect gift is an experience that everybody will have at least once in his or her lifetime. With all of the magazines and gorgeous displays in stores, it is easy to simply buy a generic present, especially when the recipient is a mere acquaintance. What is one to do, however, when the recipient is a loved one, deserving of a well-thought out present? Well, with a bit of creativity and a little thought, it is possible to find the perfect present for any family member, for any occasion.

Weddings are probably the simplest gifting occasions that there are. A registry is almost certainly posted somewhere, making it easy to find something appropriate. Anniversaries can be a little more complicated. If it is your anniversary, you probably have a fair idea of what your partner would like, but if celebrating the anniversary of another relative, giving them something that they can use together is appreciated. Sympathy gifts, for example for funerals, are the most difficult, but in that situation it is best to simply ask the recipients what they would like. Sending flowers is generally acceptable, but a donation to a particular charity or cause might be preferred.

The idea of recreating a memory is especially touching to most women. As with the sister that is reminded on her wedding day that she will always have the love of her brother, such presents can go a long way in reconnecting with family members. Mothers will always love homemade presents from their children, no matter the children's age. For example, if a son grows up to become a glass-blower or carpenter, his mother would love a creation from him just as much as she used to love his macaroni-art.

Men are similar to women in that they generally want things that match their interests. A man who likes doing projects around the house might appreciate a new drill; a man who has ended up in the hospital every time he touched a power tool probably would not. Again, things that are strictly useful are not always the most appreciated, and the relationship with the giver remains very important.

The theme of 'memory' gifts can be extended to birthdays. If your brother used to love playing with Army action figures, buy him some and write a note to go along with them about how you'll never try to steal them again. If you remember breaking Mom's favorite serving bowl when you were young, get her a new one and write in the card, 'Sorry, Mom.' She's bound to love it and smile. If Dad loves Civil War movies, plan a trip to Gettysburg for him. It will be unique, and he'll be astounded.

With children, the idea of recreating an old memory can sometimes be difficult, so instead, form a new memory. If the child in question loves animals, spend a day at the zoo with him. When kids are young, they will adore anything that involves spending time with their family, so just set aside a day and do whatever pleases them.

The type of present that you buy for a relative depends very much on the circumstances, be it a wedding, a birthday, or a special occasion. What is appropriate for a holiday is not for a funeral. The personality and desires of the recipient should also be taken into consideration regardless of the occasion. If done with thought and consideration, gift-giving can be very rewarding for all concerned.
