[G264]Gifts For Pet Lovers
by Elyse Grau, Ely
A top favorite on my bookshelf is Suzanne Clothier's Bones Would Rain from the Sky. The book speaks of the special bonds we have with our dogs, sometimes that we are not even aware of.

Clothier is a nationally renowned dog trainer. Using both her own dogs and dogs she has trained for others, she illustrates how dogs think, the nature of their relationship with us, their behavior and other lessons.

I found it beautifully written; moving, sweet, funny at times, heartbreaking at others. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns or wants to own a dog.

For lighter stories, there are always James Herriot's wonderful books, beginning with All Creatures Great and Small. His most well-known works are available in a gift set.

My all-time favorite cat book is The Silent Miaow by Paul Gallico. Subtitled "a Manual for Kittens, Strays, and Homeless Cats",it's written in the first person-cat. The aim of the book is to teach motherless cats how to properly live with humans. It is a twenty-year old book, but is still available in paperback.

The book's narrator explains: "there is no question but that we are quite the most graceful animals in existence, and this you must keep uppermost in your mind in all of your attitudes and poses..." . On doors he tell the reader: "..teach them [your humans] the necessity of dropping whatever they happen to be doing to open one of them to let you in or out."

A nice picture book for breed identification and description is the Eyewitness Handbooks series Dogs or Cats.

The way the animals are grouped in this book may differ from the way you are used to seeing, as it was written in England. They are meant to be international in scope.

Descriptions are brief, and will not be enough information for choosing a breed to adopt, but it is a great book for simple identification, or as a starting place in the decision making process.

Food Pets Die For by Ann Martin is a no-holds-barred, well-researched book giving the consumer a unique look into the pet food industry. The tells the truth about pet foods - whether we want to hear it or not. A must read for anyone feeding grocery-store brand pet foods.

There are numerous books available to on in keeping your pets healthy and dealing with health concerns.

One of the first authors to address holistic healing for pets is Dr. Richard Pitcairn in his Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. It is now in its third edition, updated with the latest information and the doctor's own experiences, and is the first book I turn to when I have a question about an animal's health.

The only book I have found that specifically addresses natural care of cats is The New Natural Cat by Anitra Frazier. The author goes into great detail on every aspect of caring for cats, from feeding to grooming to specific health problems.

When it comes to dog training, there are many approaches and many books and videos. Basically most books can be placed in one of two schools of thought as far as training method, either traditional negative punishment-based training, or the newer, positive reward-based training.

I believe that positive training is the way to go, even if it is harder for the human to learn. One of the most well-written books on the subject is Pat Miller's The Power of Positive Dog Training.

In her book, Miller explains both the theory positive dog training as well as the mechanics of making it work. There are chapters on basic commands as well as common behavior problems.

Pat Miller is a dog trainer with over thirty years of experience, and has used many methods and tools in that time.

There are, of course, plenty of other books on the subject of pets, from 'how-tos' to photographic essays, both humorous and poignant. Hours can be spent in just one aisle of the bookstores, trying to decide on a title or two.

But what a great way to spend some time! Here's wishing you a happy and safe holiday season!

Let's face it; almost everyone has a few friends who are crazy about their pets. Whether it's a colleague who's nuts about his pooch or a dorm mate who can't live without her kitty, we all know someone who's really into pets, for one reason or another. And when gift giving time comes, more often than not, they just get some boring, absurd gifts from people that have no idea about their pet-loving personalities.

Come Christmas or any other special occasion, forget the boring package of treats or biscuits. Now, is this all there is to give for your pet-loving friend or family member? C'mon, people, there are loads of other, more fun and more creative gifts to give! If you really want to give a special present this year, I've got some great ideas for you.

First Aid kits ? We're often prepared for an emergency involving people, but what about our pets? Lots of accidents also happen to pets, you know. There are lots of first-aid kits for animals online, stocked with veterinarian-approved products and medications. These kits also come with instruction booklets for proper first-aid procedures.

Scrapbooks ? If you've got a friend or family member with a creative eye and a pet lover to boot, then you've found the perfect gift for him or her. Give crafty pet lovers a creative outlet that involves their favorite four-legged friend by presenting a complete scrapbooking supply kit filled with all the materials needed to jumpstart an album.

Donations ? Give a donation to a charity that helps animals, regionally or globally. This should endear you to your pet lover. There are lots of humane societies and organizations, and they are always in need of more funds and supplies to keep their operations running smoothly and effectively.

Obedience Training ? Do you know someone who just cannot make his beloved pet sit and stay? Are you lending a constant ear of sympathy to a friend whose pet is forever misbehaving? Do them a favor and give them a ?full scholarship? to obedience school. Dog obedience class can cost from $100 to $150 for several weekly sessions. You can also get them some private lessons if it's preferable.

Collar Bling ? The special pet needs a special collar, whether it's a cat or a dog. You can select from the many gorgeous collars available at pet specialty shops in your shopping mall or online, or you could also get that special dog or cat some bling with collar charms that come in all sorts of shapes, styles, and sizes that work just fine.

Knit for A Pet ? Lots of project ideas will surely flow from a present of knitting pattern books, from beds, carrying baskets and cases, toys, etc. to create some masterpieces that celebrate the affection and bond between human and pet.

A Day at the Spa ? Pets, like humans, endure a lot of stress, too. And there's no better way to melt all that stress away than to treat them at a relaxing and comfortable day at the spa? There they can be groomed, cleaned, and relaxed to their hearts? content. Grooming will cost around $30 to $40, depending on the size and fur length of the pet. They can even enjoy luxurious options and similar perks at a few luxury establishments.
