Here's a short guide to help every marketer in the world boost their traffic without paying a nickel for it. Let's start with the basics.

First, get a blog on either Blogger or Wordpress. Blogger has the advantage of being owned by Google so your blog can quickly appear in the search results and it's easy to add Adsense to monetize your blog. When you choose the content for your blog, make sure the keywords that attract visitors to your site appear in the title, description, and posts on your blog. Add links to whatever site or sites you are promoting. Then visit other blogs with those keywords and leave comments of value, including a link to your blog as well.

A second free traffic generating method is searching for directories that accept free submissions to get listed. These are great because the listings are all related to the same niche so people will see your site listed among other prominent sites within the same market. This is also a great way of acquiring more one-way back links to your site which can help boost your search engine rankings and at the same time improve the quality of the directory and the experience of its visitors. That's what we call a win-win-win situation!

A third method of generating free traffic is using a banner exchange. It's best if you have an attractive banner to the site you're promoting so that when it appears on other people's sites, you will attract visitors away from them and directly to you. The drawback is that you in turn, need to display banner ads as well. I recommend using banner exchanges, but not the traditional way. Using a combination of them, you can exponentially increase your free advertising credits in a short period of time.

Fourth and final method for today is make use of the "about me" page on eBay, no matter what you're selling. Posting links on your about me page is a great way to attract visitors since eBay is one of the top ten most trafficked sites every day. Make use of eBay's hard work as leverage to get some of those visitors to come to your site as well.

This is hardly a comprehensive list of free traffic generating methods, but these can be powerful and should not be overlooked when planning a site promotion strategy. We have a rash of ebooks that promise to make you so much money you'll be able to quit your day job, kill your day job, fire your boss, etc. The common thread of each of these systems is the use of pay per click traffic. They usually concentrate on Google Adwords, and also may mention Yahoo Search Marketing, and MSN Adcenter.

However, managing a paid search campaign takes experience, and is not a skill somebody can really learn in a hundred page book. The authors must realize that 90 perccent of the people who attempt to run their first few campaigns will run through their advertising budgets and give up in frustration. A few will persist, and through luck or insight, be able to profit. But this will take up a lot of time, and after subtracting the advertising costs, even some of these people will realize they were not well compensated.

When people ask me how to get an online business started, I urge them to begin with free traffic. Believe me, there are still tons of free advertising sources out in cyberspace. I think a person who is new to internet marketing will be better served by testing different merchant programs, learning to write sales copy, and constructing effective ads, and then using free traffic to test them. Then, after an affiliate marketer finds a great product, and has a few sales under his or her belt, it may be time to consider paying for traffic.

Free traffic from major search engines like Google and Yahoo is called 'natural' or 'organic' traffic. Concentrate on making search engine friendly websites. You can find lots of free website optimization tips so your website will be found when internet surfers are looking for products like yours.

If you don't know how to build a website, consider making a blog. Free blogger sources like are great places to start. You can also use the major social networking sites like Myspace, Digg, or Squidoo. You can also submit articles which point back to your website or blog. Social networking and article submission sies are all designed to be very easy to use, and you will not need any special technical skills. Participate in forums that are related to the products you are selling, and you will be certain to find a good place to plug your own website!

It may seem like generating free traffic will be more difficult than simply paying for traffic. However, I believe that a beginning marketer will be better served by concetrateing on learning how to market, and in finding good products to sell, than by spending all of their time managing a paid traffic campaign!
