There is a very real war going on today to get into a youth's mind and impact their thoughts and attitudes. Clothing, music, television and movies are just the beginning, many more battlefields are ahead.

The absolute worst are found in the movies. Most of the movies that are being produced currently, are "R" rated, for restricted. Movies with some possible value are peppered with profanity and sexually explicit themes in an attempt to raise its rating up to “R". Teenagers can easily see these movies through cable or satellite television, or on DVD's. Older teens have no problem to see them in theaters in the first place.

Pay particular attention to movies with PG-13 ratings which are geared at teen viewers. Many are full of ghosts, demonic beings, witchcraft and other demonic themes designed to entice teens with the thrill of being scared. Unknown to them, these terrifying scenes play back in their minds for a long time after the movie has concluded.

The Harry Potter line alone has produced an industry of books, games, movies, clothing and other items. Were your kids allowed to read the Harry Potter books? Some parents permitted this on the basis that their children were at least reading a book; could they be serious? Are you aware of what the Bible has to say on the topic of witchcraft? Well, according to Exodus 22:18 NIV, which states "Do not allow a sorceress to live," witchcraft is a serious matter.

T.V. is just as bad. Casual sex is rampant, even in food commercials today. The occult is seen as a source of power and frivolity. Currently, Mediums and Ghost Whisperers are portrayed in real life and on shows as people are claiming to converse with the dead. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 states : "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead." What should good guardians say in reaction to the verse that says "Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD"?

Pray hard, talk with your kids about what they are watching and discuss the good and bad points. Parents can put blocks on their own televisions to disallow certain ratings from being shown.

Encourage your teen to attend youth groups, so that they have peers who understand the regulations placed upon them, and to make peer pressure work for your goal.

Sexuality explicit, violent, drug infested, and suicidal themes are another area of disagreement when discussing secular music. It is fortunate that there are many Christian bands that blend Christian themes with the popular styles of music. Steer your teenage child toward these artists. Periodically review the content on their iPods and check the CD's that they listen to.

Today's fashion designer's have successfully made our daughters look like street walkers, when they are simply on their way to school. Finding modest clothing is no easy task. Be certain that your teenager's shirt speaks life, if it has to have text on it. You may have some difficulty finding stylish Christian-themed clothing, in your local stores, that your teens will love. However you will be pleased with the selection of Christian clothing available online and at affordable prices.

You should pray hard, stay involved in your teen's life, and hope the truth will prevail. Both of you will be able to make it through these difficult years.
