[F969]Furniture For A Living Room
by Angela Stephens, Ang

When it comes time to choosing furniture for your living room, it is easy to be overwhelmed with all the options. Do you go with the three-seater sofa in micro fiber or a loveseat slip covered for durability? Or how about deciding on a table? With all the choices including cocktail tables, end tables, side tables, coffee tables, and console tables, is it possible to find the perfect one?

These days the living room serves many purposes. It may be the primary family space where television viewing, relaxing and casual living happens. It may also be where the entertaining magic happens. This multi tasking is why it is so important that every piece of furniture serves a purpose and also looks great too.

Let's explore some furniture options for a living room.

-Seating-
Arguably, the most important pieces of furniture in a living room are the seating options. They will determine how you use the space. If the space is to be used for lounging and tv watching, the seating needs to be comfortable. That doesn't mean that everything has to be overstuffed and sloppy looking, but comfort should be key. Consider a larger sofa for lounging or taking a nap. However, if entertaining is the main goal of the space you may want to have loveseats or even chairs. Often they can provide more seating than that giant sectional.

Fabric selection is also very important. If you have children or pets, choosing durable or washable fabrics is a must. Leather and micro fiber are washable and stain resistant. Another great option is washable slipcovers in canvas or twill. It is a good idea to have neutral fabrics on the larger pieces, as they will be more expensive to change later. Using a patterned fabric for side chairs or an ottoman is a one way to add interest to the space.

-Storage-
Storage furniture is vital to any room especially in the living room. You can tailor your storage furniture to your specific needs. If there is a television and components in the space, you may want a media console or an armoire to hide away all the electronics, cords and such. Perhaps you have a lot of books that need to be organized. Bookcases can be a great solution. If you prefer a clean look, you can add doors to the bookshelves. With young children who may use the space to play, a blanket chest or trunk is a good option to store toys. Or a piece with deep drawers that slide easily would also work nicely.

-Tables-
Though the selection of occasional tables can be vast, the great part is you are sure to find one that works. A sofa table placed behind the couch offers a great place for lighting and can help break up the expanse of the back of the sofa. Coffee tables are useful for putting your feet up, or setting a drink down, not to mention they keep the sofa in proper proportion. Side tables and end tables are probably the most versatile tables. They are mostly placed to the side and on the end of other furnishings, hence the names. You can find great looking tables at any price point. They are an easy way to reinforce your style, or add an interesting and eclectic touch to any space.

No matter your style, budget, or square footage, your living room can be a welcoming and relaxing space. With a few well-chosen pieces, and a little bit of planning, your room can be a place you won't mind calling home.
