What Is A Scholarship

According to Wikipedia.com, “A scholarship is an award of access to an institution, or a financial aid award for a student to further education. Scholarships are awarded on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award.”

For many, the opportunity of getting a scholarship is the only way they can attend college because of the financial burden going to college can place upon them and family members. There are many costs you have to consider, along with the cost of tuition you also have to consider the cost of books, shelter, travel, food, clothing, and entertainment. Getting a college scholarship based on athletics is only one of many ways which you can get a college scholarship and some scholarships cover many costs that are not directly associated with college tuition and books.

Full Ride Scholarships

The NCAA carefully restricts which sports are eligible to offer full-ride scholarships. If it's the elusive full ride scholarship you're seeking, your best bet is to work on defining your skills in football, basketball (men's and women's), women's volleyball, and men's hockey (considered the core sports in college athletics).

If your two sports happen to be, say, football & basketball or volleyball & basketball, it's a good idea to research what the schools that you're interested in offer. For instance, not all colleges have football programs. With fewer football programs around to choose from, your chances of scoring a full ride basketball scholarship increases. Keep in mind, though, that many football programs offer more full ride scholarships than the basketball programs can offer.

Partial Scholarships

The vast majority of athletes who are awarded athletic scholarships receive partial scholarships. These pay either fixed amounts or for specific charges or fees. The funds are no less competitive, though, so it's important to know the basics of which sports are the best for increases the chances of getting a scholarship.

First of all, if you have the option, avoid pursuing scholarships in especially obscure sports. An above average archer, for instance, may have trouble securing an archery scholarship. Common scholarships that offer partial funding include tennis, track & field, baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball and cross-country.

You'll also want to consider the schools that you are interested in and what type of programs they offer. Successful programs typically have more funds available to use to offer scholarships, so seek out schools – even smaller schools that may be under the radar of other national high school sports starts – that perform well in their respective sports.

Keep an eye on numbers and opportunities, and you will great increase your chances of scoring a college athletic scholarship.
