Born on July 6th 1907, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter, who painted using vibrant colours in a style that revealed influences from the indigenous cultures of Mexico as well as European schools such as Realism, Symbolism and Surrealism. Many of her most celebrated works are self-portraits that symbolically express her own pain and sexuality.

Staying at one of the many Mexico City hostels visitors can easily find works by the artist and her husband Diego Rivera in several museums around the city.

The "Blue House"

The Casa Azul, or "Blue House" was Frida Kahlo's family home and is where Kahlo spent her childhood as well as the final years of her life. The home, decorated by Kahlo in her unique style, has been turned into a museum where visitors can admire many of the rooms in the state they were at the time of the artist's death.

The colonial-style house forms a U-shape around a verdant central courtyard and is itself a please to stroll around.

The museum is located at Londres 247, on the corner of Allende in Coyoacan and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.

Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo

This avant-garde house was home to Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera between 1934 and 1940, and is where Rivera returned to live after Frida's death in 1954. The building is now a museum and contains some of Rivera's art as well as the couple's personal belongings.

The house itself is also notable having been Designed by Mexican architect and painter Juan O'Gorman in 1931.

It is located at Diego Rivera 2 and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.

Museo Dolores Olmedo Pati'o

A large selection of both Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's work is available to see at this museum which is in the home of Dolores Olmedo Pati'o, who at one time posed for Diego Rivera, and later became his mistress and an important patron.

The museum is located at Avenida M'xico 5843, Colonia La Noria, in Xochimilco and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.
