[F911]From Your Mobile Phone
by Aaron Siegel, Aar
Modern mobile phones change rapidly so current models are constantly being superseded for a newer, improved version; it can be very difficult keeping up with all the latest functions that you can't possibly do without. Education is the key to successfully buying or arranging a contract; below are some facts every user should know before upgrading.

Battery life is always an issue and even though they last longer (and are smaller), they have much more to do, so always leaving your phone until it is almost drained of power can cause problems. There is nothing worse than finding out your mobile phone battery is no longer holding a charge for very long as you seem to be recharging it constantly and you will probably need a new one.

Some mobile phones have an automatic back light facility which only comes on when buttons are pressed which saves unnecessary power drain from your battery. If your phone does not have this function, turn the back light off when you are not using the phone or turn down the brightness if this cannot be done. When the phone is operational, it is constantly searching for a signal which is ok when there is good signal strength but if this is lost, it still tries to find a signal using more power and draining the mobile phone battery in the process; the same way that long conversations do. Today's mobile phones have many more functions and if you spend a great deal of time surfing the Internet or listening to music, the battery deplete earlier than it should, possibly just when you need to use to speak to someone.

You will often find that wallpapers, ring tones and images that are downloaded automatically will have a charge even though this is not mentioned at the start so be aware. For parents buying a phone for their child, most companies will now allow them to disable this download function so only the mother or father has control over it via a password feature that the child cannot override.

The two man types of agreements for mobile phone users are pay-per use and a monthly contract which can run for one or two years but which option you decide upon will depend on how often you intend to use it. The process for each contract will differ greatly but arranging a pay-per use contract for a regular phone user is probably not the best option to have financially speaking. Some features like tri-band or quad-band means they can be used in Europe and Asia but these may only be available with phones that are part of a long term agreement so look out for deals that will be of benefit to you.

If you travel as part of your work then ensure that roaming charges are part of the contract you decide on and be careful of those hidden costs that are only noticed after you have signed the agreement. Many contracts come with an insurance warranty for the phone because it is easy to loose or damage a phone that is carried with you everywhere. You will have the assurance that it is replaced should anything untoward happen.

You also want to make sure that the parts and accessories are easily obtained from any regular mobile phone store, even if you purchase the phone from an Internet based company.

Mobile phone usage is getting out of control. By this I mean the loud, rude attitude that almost everybody carrying a mobile phone is becoming guilty of. The irritating ring tones and the incessant yakking spare nothing; not even weddings, funerals, and conferences. And I'm not kidding about this. Just ask a lot of salesmen, executives, doctors, lawyers, and practically anybody. They'll know what I'm talking about.

From avenues to movie theaters, from clinics to conference rooms, from restaurants to churches, boorish cell phone users can victimize you. It seems that carrying a mobile phone allows people to act like cavemen. A lot of stories have emerged that can prove what I'm talking about. One of my favorites is about a speaker who was doing a demonstration. When his mobile phone rang, he immediately stopped and answered his phone! It's about time that we lay down the law about proper cell phone etiquette.

In a recent poll, majority of Americans agree that the worst habit of cell phone users is carrying out loud conversations in public. Furthermore, deplorable cell phone etiquette is observed by almost everybody at least once a day. But let us be clear on one thing. Cell phones are not to blame for this one. People are. Cell phone sales are rising. So are the sound level and the rudeness. Mobile technology is being abused all around us. It's time to take a stand against it. Here are some dos and don'ts.

Don't take a personal call in the middle of a business meeting. This rule also includes meetings with co-workers or subordinates, and job interviews. You'll be surprised to know how many job applicants flunk this one.

Remember to keep at least 10-feet away from anyone during a cell phone conversation. We don't want to know about the banalities of your life, really. Inform all your callers that you're talking on a cellular phone, so they'll know to expect distractions or disconnections. And keep all conversations short and sweet.

Do not hold a phone conversation inside auditoriums, elevators, libraries, churches, graveyards, hospitals, restaurants, galleries, or any other enclosed public spaces. Try also not to hold an intimate phone conversation while in public. If you really have to, use an earpiece in noisy locations, so that you can control the volume of your voice.

Don't set your ring tone to play Beethoven every time someone calls you. Do we really have to listen to this nonsense? Grow up! Also, forget about multi-tasking with your cell phone. Avoid making calls while buying groceries, jogging, waiting in line or doing other personal business. And one more thing. Tell everyone that you're now using improved cell phone etiquette, and encourage them to do the same. It's very important.

Technology and good manners can live in harmony together. The same thing happened with the Internet, when email etiquette had to be observed. You can always use the vibrate function, use voice mail, or go to a secluded area before making a call. All it takes is a little bit of consideration.
