[G54]Gas Radio Controlled Helicopter
by Victor Epand, Vic
For several reasons, almost all beginners choose to start their hobby with an electric RC helicopter. In the first place, an electric helicopter is cheaper than a gas engine powered one. Secondly, it is easier to fly, as it does not have an engine. Lastly, the electric RC helicopter produces no sound or smell. For these reasons, one can conclude that those who choose an electric RC helicopter prefer convenience to the thrill of actually flying it.

While there is no reason to decry the electric RC helicopter, it is probably not meant for hobbyists, who want more than just a convenience. The question that arises is, why choose a gas powered RC helicopter? Beside the price factor, as the gas powered helicopter does not come cheap, there is also the noise factor of the engine, which is inevitable. The answer lies here. Genuine RC pilots prefer noise to silence, the cost of the plane and above all, convenience. The added intricacy of the engine makes it all the more challenging for those who desire the actual experience of flying a gas engine powered helicopter. One does not see a full-scale electric helicopter. Important reason for RC helicopter enthusiasts is the closeness of the RC model to the real flying machine.

Another major aspect that sets apart flying the electric RC model to gas powered helicopter are the level of appreciation and skill required for flying on each occasion. Since, gas and an engine are involved, a RC helicopter pilot takes the task to fly much more seriously. Besides, the actual thrill of flying is an adrenalin rush each time one takes to fly.

The advantage of the gas RC helicopter is that the next step is a graduation to the ultra light flight. Hence, with a gas engine powered helicopter, there is no necessity to upgrade, as one would have to with an electric RC helicopter. If one upgrades to ultra light, one can easily get conversant with the actual flying. The basics of helicopter flying are learnt more easily with an engine-driven helicopter than any other RC helicopter that takes to the skies.

Gas RC helicopters can fly at a ground speed of 80 mph at an altitude of 1000-12000 feet. With a little practice, bigger circuits can be done, but speeds must be kept down. For additional speed, the training gear could be taken off. Practice hovering over the ground; at least 3 feet high and hold it steady. The wind will really affect at this level. Control becomes that much more exciting!

The RC gas helicopter is much less complicated than a fixed wing plane. Simply by pulling up or adding throttle can correct the flight. RC gas powered helicopter flying is thus more rewarding as flying skills are tested all the time and at every level.

If flying RC gas powered helicopter is flown in an unknown territory, then you should waste no time in exploring the territory to fly it. The thrill is limitless!
