Moisturizing body lotions or moisturizers are one the most famous items in the skin care industry. The often have very enticing ads on TV that shows the molecules of the product go in deep into the skin and provide the layers of the epidermis with much needed moisture. Do they really work like that? Well, not exactly - not for most anyways.

How Does It Work?

Skin moisturizers work by sealing in the moisture of your skin and preventing further loss. It doesn't actually add to the moisture that is already there. At best, it rehydrates the topmost layer of the skin the way water soaks a dry piece of paper. But as for penetrating in to the deeper layers - well, the molecules of the product are often to big to do that, especially if they are oil based. However, this doesn't mean that this stuff doesn't work and that you should stop using them. In fact, using this type of rehydrating item is the best thing for your skin. If your skin is already used to being moisturized by a particular product, it has a tendency to dry up much easily if you do not continue applying it.

The Smoothing Effect Of Moisturizers

If you are wondering why your skin feels smooth and supple after you have used a moisturizing product, the answer to that is due to the emollients. Emollients are compounds that fill in the gap in your skin and effectively reduce the roughness of the skin. They achieve the smooth texture by filling in the spaces in between the skin with tiny droplets of oil. Another compound found in moisturizing lotion is called humectants; these compounds attract water to the surface of the skin making it more supple.

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Moisturizer?
am
You can get the most out of your moisturizing product by knowing the right time to apply it - and that is right after you have taken a warm shower. This is the time when your skin is still a little bit wet. This not only make the application easier, but this will also ensure that your skin absorbs the cream more easily (because your pores are still slightly open). You will be able to seal in your skin's natural moisture more easily than when applying these products later when the skin is already dry.
You should apply it sparingly; giving special attention to those body parts that easily gets dry like the elbow and arms. It is also advisable to follow up application every five hours or earlier to provide maximum protection.
