But the truth is that you can achieve excellent results and save a lot of money by coloring your hair at home as long as you know a few basics about choosing the right color and applying it correctly. After shampooing, always blot your hair dry. Don't rub hair dry or wrap it in a tight turban. When using a blow dryer, dry your head? not your hair. Over drying hair strips it of moisture and also results in static.

It is advised to choose a hair color which is 1 ? 3 times lighter than the natural color of the hair. After hair coloring, it is good to use color enhancing conditioners, shampoos and other hair styling products.

It is better to avoid swimming pools which are treated with chlorine or any kind of bleaches and also to avoid the sun after hair coloring as these factors can make the color fade. Color treated hair should not be washed in hot water, instead luke warm water can be used and then at the end cold water is used as it seals the cuticles of the hair.

When temporary hair colors are used, frequent shampooing is not recommended as it is dislodge the temporary hair color. Two spoons of hair color can be used along with the regular conditioner after each shampooing which makes the color last for long. Flat iron, blow dryers and curling irons should be avoided if possible.

Before applying a hair color it is very necessary to take a skin allergy test to confirm that the chemicals in the hair color do not have any adverse effect on the person.
