[H607]Home Water Damage Repair
by Rachel Yoshida, Rac
It seems like almost every time we turn on the television or get on the computer we hear more stories about a natural disaster of one kind or another. They are happening all over the world with what appears to be increased intensity. It is hard to tell whether there are actually more disasters taking place or if it is because the news coverage is extensive and constant all the time. Either way here in our country we have definitely been getting more than our fair share of floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes in recent years.

Most recently it has been the Mid West that has been suffering from flooding because of too much rain and then rising rivers and streams. In these low lying farmland areas, it has taken a devastating toll on farmers and homeowners alike. Entire fields of crops have been under water with no chance of salvaging them. We all know that this will mean higher prices at the grocery store and for products made using corn, those items will be more expensive too.

While the damage to crops is bad enough for the economy, the damage that flooding does to homeowners and renters alike it just as devastating. People have had to flee there homes quickly in many cases due to flash flooding that they do not always see coming. This is the worst because it does not give them time to remove many of their belongings and this makes the overall losses even worse for them.

When rivers and streams flood, they usually do occur quickly and within days or a week or two the water is gone and nothing is left but sludge and mud everywhere. Even if a home is only flooded with six inches of water, it leaves a lot of home destruction that can cost thousands of dollars to repair. For many whose homes are flooded throughout with several feet or more of water, the home can be a total loss. The only way people can really deal well with a situation like this is if they are adequately insured.

When you make sure your home insurance covers flooding from Mother Nature, you can have the damage repaired by professionals or even rebuild if necessary. Those who are caught without flood insurance can have few options when it comes to water damage repairs. Mold is one of the biggest problems because it can begin to grow fairly quickly and require extensive clean up. Then there are the other damages such as woodwork, furniture, electronics, personal items, and so much more. If you think you are even close to an area that has a small chance of flooding, get flood insurance. You might find that if a flood comes, it will mean the difference in being able to save your home or not.

The moment you see your home badly damaged and all your properties soaking wet, you immediately want to grab on your cleaners and dryers and start restoring whatever it is that can be restored. More than your home and property restoration; however, there is something which should even be given major importance - your health and safety. Before you start picking up what is yet to be saved, always ensure that you are safe from the dangers of newly water damaged home. Below are safety precaution tips to bear in mind when dealing with water damage.

1. Always observe essential health precautions. Always wash your hands after contact with flood water especially before preparing or eating meals. Until authorities announce that public water supply is safe for consumption, do not use water for any of your home activities - even if it's just brushing your teeth or washing the dishes. Utensils which have been soaked in water damage need to be thoroughly cleaned and boiled in fresh water before use. Always keep your wellies ready especially during the clean up to reduce the risk of infection.

2. Be sensitive for early signs of infection, as water damage may be caused by a breakout of sewage disposal systems and there would surely be chemical dislodgement and overflowing of toxic wastes. Households affected with water damage are prone to chemical poisoning. This phenomenon can be very dangerous to health. Always guard yourself against exposure to these harmful elements by wearing protective clothing all the time. Some of the common symptoms for chemical poisoning are skin rashes, dizziness, nausea, headache, excitability and fatigue.

3. Practice proper hygiene all the time. Any property which has been affected by flood water could contain sewage. This brings the risk of infection caused by harmful bacteria like Salmonella, Typhoid and Tetanus, E. Coli and Hepatitis A, just to name a few. You can combat these illnesses by always keeping your body clean. Use a good germicidal soap when washing your hands.

4. Water damaged areas are prone to electrical and fire hazards. Do not enter the flooded area if the ground is still wet unless you are 100% sure that the power supply has been switched off. If water is present near your electrical circuits, turn of the main switch for added safety. Do not touch your appliances until completely dried and have been checked by professional.

5. Leave it to the professionals. The good thing about hiring the services of professional conservator and electricians is that they know best about what needs to be done and so they can guarantee you successful results. Apart from these, you are ensured of your safety as well. There is no need for you to be present throughout the cleanup and so you are freed from the risks of health hazards.

Before attempting to salvage or restore anything, always put one thing on top of everything - you and your family's safety. Flood damage has already caused you too much loss, make sure you don't lose your health as well. Hence, always keep the above safety precautions in mind.
