Downline building is a numbers game and a lot of the affiliates who signup will do nothing. 5 to 10% of all signups will actually do what it takes to succeed. The rest, well, they signup and wait to earn money while doing nothing. So when I say it's a numbers game, I mean the more you recruit, the more chances you have of finding diamonds in the rough.
Here are 5 ways to start building your downline empire.
1. Advertise in Ezines
Find Ezines or Newsletter directly related to what you're advertising. If you're advertising a Home Business Affiliate Program, find Ezines that are related to Home Business Opportunities, since its readers subscribed to be informed of money making opportunities. Remember to keep track of your advertisement's performance, so you can weed out the ezines that are not providing a good response.
2. Pay-Per-Click
PPC is a great way to bring in affiliates. By bidding on a particular keyword or phrase, you can target exactly the people wanting to register to your affiliate program. Well researched keyword bidding can turn out to be your best investment ever, if you know how.
3. Guaranteed sign-ups
With these programs, you pay for the amount of signups you want. They cost a little more, but in my opinion, they're worth it. You can buy 25 signups for $15-$20, but you need to have a great follow-up email sequence to motivate them and give them the support they need to succeed.
4. Writing articles
What's better than looking like an expert in your field? You need to "Brand" yourself to the marketing world. By writing articles related to your market, you will be perceived as a super-affiliate. Explaining some aspects of affiliate programs and their benefits, you entice people to listen to what you have to say. They see your name and recognize you, and come to trust you.

5. Signature files
Signature file is another free way to advertise. At the end of every email you send, include a one or two liner, plugging your affiliate program or a free book leading them to your promotion website. You just can't image how far an email can go without any effort whatsoever.
One more thing you need to do is give your tips and techniques on how to promote to your downline. It's called "Duplication". If you help them succeed, then and only then, will you be successful. Be there for your Downline, and it will reward you in many ways!

If you don't know them by heart, look them up and alter them to your tasting. This is an easy way to get a few inbound links to your newly made website.
But how does this do any good to your existing ? non cooking ? website?
If you target your keywords correctly, you might stand a chance of actually making a little revenue from this simple site. While the sites about cooking and recipes are many, so are the keywords ? Look at all the different ingredients, strange names of dishes etc. etc. You should have no problem finding a keyword to target. It might not be an avalanche of visitors, but with an ? or contextual advertising for the lazy ? you can make some revenue from it.
Another excellent side effect from the endless keyword variations is the ability to point somewhat relevant links to various pages. If you find yourself with a recipe site no one visits, you can instead make use of the various ingredients, linking it to your main site ? the one you where struggling with. This does take some imagination, to translate ingredients into non-cooking topics, but it can be done. If you continue to submit recipes, this site will eventually have a very high page rank, making the links from it rise in value. Even if the links are non-related, a little deep linking won't hurt.
