[H649]Horse Tack And Equipment
by Gordon Petten, Gor
If you are thinking of owning a horse, there are several pieces of equipment you will need in order to properly care for and enjoy your horse. Since you will most likely want to ride your horse, you will need an array of items to help make this much easier. The items associated with caring for a horse in this capacity are known as horse tack.

Horse tack includes the bridal, saddle, bit, girths, and other items needed to help you learn how to ride and do it effectively. The term 'horse tack' encompasses a wide variety of items, and they all come in many different types so that will fit a variety of needs.

There are different types of horse tack, so before you actually set out to choose the items you will need, it is a good idea to know just what you are looking for so that you purchase the correct tack. For example, English and Western tack are two very different types, so it is important to know what you are doing before making any type of purchase. If you are unsure about what you will need, you might consider reading materials on the different types of tack and what each item is used for before making any decisions. It may also help to consult other horse lovers who are more experienced and can guide you in the right direction.

Owning a horse is also quite an investment. It can take a good bit of money to properly care for a horse and to purchase the necessary equipment, so be prepared. Be sure that this is something you are willing to invest time in as well. You will need it to get used to your horse, and to learn how to break and ride it.

One of the most important decisions you will make when purchasing horse tack is in choosing the right saddle. This is crucial since you and the horse must be comfortable with your choice. The saddle must be right for you and the horse, and you must feel secure in it.

The bit is another important piece of equipment. When choosing a bit, it is important to keep in mind that different types of bits work better for different horses, so it may take some time to find one that will work. The horse will also need to get used to the bit, which may take some time, since horses generally do not like them. This will be especially important to you, the new owner, if the horse has never been ridden.

Most importantly, be sure you have the time to spend with your horse. It is just as important that the horse is used to you as it is that you are used to it. Remember, you are forming a bond with your horse, and with that bond, you are establishing trust. This is a relationship that will last for many years to come.

If you ride horses, you know that tacking up a horse refers to the equipment worn by a horse to allow us to ride them with more ease. There is a wide range of tack and all has to be fitted to the individual horse. Tacking up requires a certain amount of expertise by the rider in order to make any discomfort for you or or animal minimal.

There are two kinds of horse tack. English and western. It consists of a halter, saddle, saddle pad, stirrup, bridle, girth (for English) / Cinches (for Western), lead ropes martingale, harnesses, and breastplates. The bridle consists of the headstall, chin strap, bits (fit into the horses mouth) and reins. There are basically three kinds of bridles: single, double and hackamore. There are four kinds of girths: webbing, leather, string and nylon. There are a large number of different kinds of saddles that people use all over the world. Jumping , dressage , polo , park , racing , English side saddle, Western side saddle, and military. Based on the rider there are also other kinds of equipment.

All equipment has to be cleaned regularly to increase the life of the leather, especially after every use. If you allow the salt from a sweating horse to stay on your leather tack it will make the leather hard and shrink making it dry out and last only one season. Wipe tack with a wet sponge and then with a horse tack cleaner that is available on the market. After cleaning check to make sure you don't need to apply leather oil to keep it fresh. For the most part, horse saddles and tack are made of leather, but with today's technology, many are made with synthetic materials. This synthetic equipment is lighter, less expensive and many times can be thrown in the washing machine for cleaning. Leather tack, on the other hand is expensive and needs a lot of care. Try to store your leather items in dry cool places such as storage containers or even in your home where the humidity is less.

Doing everything possible to preserve your tack will save you money in the long run. Tack is very expensive to replace, although now that the Internet is selling tack and saddles, you are able to get discounted prices. Just search to get the best price available. Show equipment is usually the highest priced as it has lots of silver with high quality leather lacing and concho's to add more flare to the horses appearance. A general purpose saddle and accessories is usually the best way to go, especially for beginning riders. As you progress, you may want to upgrade to the more expensive equipment. Also, there are lots of used saddles and tack available at a much cheaper price.
