1) How long has the company been in business? I recommend finding one that is at least two years old and has been through the growing pains. No, two years is not very long and there is still some risk, however, it's a lot less risk.
2) Product appeal? Does the product line have mass appeal or is it a niche product? A product with mass appeal will require more advertising funds and broad advertising approach. If you are selling a Internet Marketing Opportunity you will be up against some pretty heavy competition. If you are selling vitamins, again, you face lots of stiff competition. However, if you pick a small niche like "civil war memorabilia" you are serving a smaller, more focused clientèle.
3) Any complaints against the company? You can go to the Better Business Bureau but I find doing a simple search online through Google will work well too. You can get lots of dirt on any company that is scamming people. Just type in the company name with the word "complaints" and you should find postings from people who have something negative to say. If you don't maybe you have a winner. Then you can go to the Better Business Bureau if you want more information.
4) It also a good practice to talk with people who are already business owners. In MLM this can be hard as most people in MLM are in it to get recruits under them so you need to ask the right questions. Don't just take their word. Fins out how long they have been involved, what has been their success, do they use the product, does the product do what it says it will, etc. Don't be afraid to ask the hard questions.
