In 1801, the Straight Turnpike which is now known as Route 1 was constructed. 1872 was a landmark year in History. A separate township of Cranbury was created from the southern extension of South Brunswick reducing the size of the town. In 1919, Plainsboro was created from South Brunswick, further reducing the size. In early South Brunswick history Kingston was an important place of trade and commerce. It lay on King's Road and Milestone River making it a favorable spot for traders to start business.
Another important place was Dayton, named after William L. Dayton, an attorney for the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad. In the middle of the 18th century Dayton had a tavern and a brick manufacturing unit. Much of the development in South Brunswick happened in the 20th century. In 1900, the fast line between New Brunswick and Trenton became operational. In 1951, the New Jersey Turnpike became operational on the Eastern side of South Brunswick. The Turnpike turned New Brunswick from a primarily agricultural township to an industrial area.
Kendall Park, located off Route 27 was the first major suburban type development in South Brunswick NJ. Today the town has approximately 33, 400 residents. Though the town has seen much development still many areas of the 42 square miles of the township are underdeveloped.
South Brunswick Township is located in the County of Middlesex in New Jersey. It was formed from New Brunswick Township and was formally incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1978. Some of its notable residents are Donald Fagen (musician and songwriter), George Segal (painter and sculptor) and DeForest Soaries (former chairman of the Election Assistance Commission).
South Brunswick Township follows the Faulkner Act form of municipal government, where partisan elections of Council members are held on a staggered basis every four years. Currently, the Mayor is Frank Gambatese and Members of the Council are Chris Killmurray, Charlie Carley, and Joseph J. Camarota Jr. The municipal building is located on 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction.
In the 20th century, South Brunswick underwent a major transformation and expansion parallel to the rise of the American industrial technology. In 1900, the trolley line named The New Brunswick and Trenton Fast Line began providing passenger and freight service to the towns inhabitants, stopping at local crossroads. Nowadays, South Brunswick is accessible through the Exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike and State Routes 1, 27 and 130. Furthermore, train stations are located in New Brunswick and Princeton Junction which are just nearby (Amtrak's Northeast Corridor line passes across South Brunswick) and public utility buses are available on Route 27. Mercer County, Philadelphia, Newark International, LaGuardia, and Kennedy International airports are all within 90 minutes travel from the town.
In 2000, the U.S. Census recorded a total of 37,734 habitants in South Brunswick, distributed within 13,428 households. 70.49% of the population was Caucasian, 7.88% African-American, 5.08% Hispanic, 0.13% Native American, 18.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander and 3.41% either from another race or from two or more races. 43% of the households had children under 18 living in the same household, while 63.8% were married couples living in one household. 8.6% of the households had a female with no husband and 24% were non-families.
The majority of the population according to the same survey were adults aged 25 to 44 and they made up 36.7% of the population, while children 18 made up 28.4% of it.
The average price of a house in South Brunswick is at $170,000, while townhouses and condominiums are priced at $80,000-$170,000. On the higher end, luxury homes in South Brunswick are selling for a minimum of half a million US dollars.
Median incomes in Brunswick households were estimated at $78,737 and median incomes for a family at $86,891. Males earned an average of $61,637 annually and women earned $41,554. Only 2.1% of the families (3.1% of the town's entire population) were below the poverty line. Additionally, 2.9% of them were under 18 and 4.5% were 65 and older.
Two years ago, South Brunswick recorded a total of 8,808 students going to the district schools in the different areas around the township. There are elementary schools located in Brooks Crossing, Brunswick Acres, Indian Fields, Cambridge, Constable, Greenbrook, and Monmouth Junction, plus two middle schools and the South Brunswick High School.
