To be successful over the long haul, every one-person business needs to do some planning. The more organized the planning - the better the choices you will make. It is not necessary for you to have a full-blown business plan, like the ones used to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the start-up and growth of businesses with a lot of employees. For the one-person business a simple business plan will suffice.

Do you really need a business plan? It really depends on the nature of your business. A business plan is a product, and if you see it that way, whether you're in a service business or a product business, you will begin to see the value to the product. Like a product, a business plan is only valuable if it's used. A business plan is really an objective written estimation of what you think is going to happen in the future based on your understanding of the current situation and what has happened in the past.

As you accumulate a history in business, whether you know it or not you begin to accumulate knowledge and data on who your market is. You also accumulate financial information even if you do not have financial statements.

The importance of doing a business plan is the process in and of itself. It's not because experts say you have to do it or a bank says you have to do it, though that may be one way to use it. The reason to do a business plan is that the very process of going through a series of questions about your business will force you to audit the current situation and think about the future - to think strategically.

Whether it's used for starting a new business or growing an existing one, the first step in any business plan is to become familiar with your personal financial condition. What is your net worth? What does your personal budget look like? How much do you need to feel financially secure? The second step is to begin looking at how much cash you will need to start or expand. Is it a realistic amount? Where can you raise the cash you need? With the answers to these questions in hand, your final step is to incorporate them into the business plan itself, which will become the blueprint for the future of your business.

Tip: Calculate Your Net Worth

One of the most powerful steps you can take to understand your financial condition is to calculate your net worth. If our economic life is about the accumulation of wealth (as economists say it is), then to understand our economic life we need to understand our wealth: where it comes from, what forms it takes, and how much of it is available for us to use in starting and running a one-person business.

Accountants have come up with a quick and simple way to help us understand our personal wealth. It's called the balance sheet statement, or statement of net worth, or, What you own and what you owe. Basically, the statement of net worth is created by writing down the value of everything you own and everything you owe and then subtracting what you owe from what you own to see what the difference is. This difference is called your net worth.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful ways of earning money online. This program gives everybody a chance to make a profit through the Internet. Since affiliate marketing programs are easy to join, implement and pays a commission on a regular basis, more an more people are now entering into this business.

However, like all businesses, there are many pitfalls in the affiliate marketing business. Committing some of the most common mistakes will cost the newbie marketer a large portion of the profits they could be generating. That is why it is better to avoid them if possible rather than falling victim as most of us have done through the learning process.

Mistake number 1: Choosing the wrong affiliate.
Many people want to earn from affiliate marketing as fast as possible. In their rush to be part of one, they tend to choose a bandwagon product. This is the kind of products that the program thinks is “hot". They choose the product that is in demand without actually considering if the product appeals to them. This is obviously not a very wise move .
Instead of jumping on the bandwagon, try top choose a product in which you are truly interested in. For any endeavor to succeed, you should take some time to plan and figure out your actions.
Pick a product that appeals to you. Then do some research about that product to see if they are in demand. Promoting a product you are more passionate about is easier than promoting one for the sake of the earnings only.

Mistake number 2: Joining too many affiliate programs.
Since affiliate programs are very easy to join, you might be tempted to join several affiliate programs to try and maximize the earnings you will be getting. You may think that there is nothing wrong with this approach, or that there’s nothing to lose by being part of many affiliate programs.
True, this is a great way to have multiple sources of income. However, joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time will most likely prevent you from concentrating on each one of them as they deserve.
The result? The maximum potential of your affiliate program may not be realized, and the income generated would not be as great as you were thinking initially it could be. The best way to get excellent result is by joining just one program that pays a good commission. Then give it your best effort by promoting your products enthusiastically and thoroughly. As soon as you see that it is making a reasonable profit and running more-less on autopilot, then perhaps you could join another affiliate program and repeat the process.
The technique here is to take it slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into things, especially with affiliate marketing. With the way things are going, the future is looking profitable and it appears that affiliate marketing will be around for a long time to come.

Mistake number 3: Not buying the product or using the service.
As an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service to your customers. For you to achieve this purpose, you must be able to convey to your customers the value of your product or service. It is difficult for you to do this if you yourself have not totally reviewed and evaluated the program. In order to promote and recommend it convincingly, you must make yourself appear to your client as a authority on the subject. By doing so you will create a desire in your customers to purchase what you are offering.

Try the product or service personally first before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering what it promises. If you have done so, then you yourself become a credible and living testament aware of its advantages and disadvantages. Your customers will then feel the sincerity and honesty in you, and this will trigger them to try your product for themselves.

Many affiliate marketers make these mistakes and are paying dearly for their actions. Do not fall into the same situation they have been in, try to do everything to avoid making the same mistakes.

Time is the key. Take your time, analyze your marketing strategy and be sure your on the right track. If done properly, you will be able to maximize your affiliate marketing efforts and earn higher profits.

Good Luck!
