One critical thing for your air conditioner is its power, or to put it differently the capacity of the air conditioner. The capacity you need will be primarily dictated by the size of your room. But that is not the sole factor. There are other issues too. This would include the kind of traffic the room has, the number of doors and windows in the room, the insulation of the walls and the windows, the wattage of other appliances used in the room, etc. Make sure that you get these factors incorporated and then choose the size of air conditioner you need. You also should be sure that the wiring in your house can handle the wattage of the air conditioner you choose. With an air conditioner of lesser capacity than required, the room will never quite be cooled. With something bigger than the requirement, not only a lot of money is wasted but also the humidity inside a room wouldn't be decreased as the air conditioner would not be required to run long enough and consequently it wouldn't be drawing in the moisture from the room.
There are four basic units in which manufacturers rate the capacity of air conditioners. These units are:
• British Thermal Unit
• Watts and Kilowatts
• Tons of refrigeration and
• Horsepower
The British Thermal Unit is the conventional way of measuring the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. Although quite an old unit and even after the introduction of more modern units, the BTU still is quite a popular unit.
Watts and kilowatts are units from the metric system that are used in measuring the cooling power of an air conditioner. If you are more comfortable with the BTU and the air conditioner you choose has the capacity ratings in watts then follow this conversion equation:
1 watt = 3.4 British Thermal Unit
One ton refrigeration can remove the amount of heat which is required to melt a ton of ice in 24 hours. The conversion here is:
1 ton refrigeration = 288000 British Thermal Unit
Horsepower is the amount of power needed to run the refrigeration unit of an air conditioner. The horsepower of an air conditioner can be anything from ΒΌ to 3000.
