At present,wind turbines are the best alternative energy source available to us.They are capable of generating most of our power needs and are non polluting.In some parts of the world they are being used as the primary power source.Individually we can easily produce all the power we need from the wind.
There are other interesting alternative energy sources. Solar power is one method of power production which shows great promise and is being used increasingly. Solar cells are however expensive and power output is limited. For this reason solar power is presently an auxiliary power supply in most cases.
Nuclear power stations are widely used around the globe. The United Kingdom and France generate a large part of their electricity supply this way. The main obstacle to increased use of nuclear power is public distrust of this method of power generation. The accidents at Chernobyl and Three mile Island in particular have caused much fear and dislike for nuclear power generation. Wind power is acceptable to most communities with the only undesirable feature being the visual pollution caused by large areas covered with big turbines.
The addition of one or two turbines can make a home or farm independent of the local power utility. Many suppliers now sell these turbines in all areas. They are fairly costly unfortunately but over time will pay for their cost and show a saving to the owner.
You can build a wind turbine yourself rather than purchasing one. This is quite a simple project using plans with instructions which are available. The cost is only a fraction of the price of a commercial wind turbine . In the 1930s to 1950s era wind power was widely used in rural areas. Since then it has largely died out since modern consumers are less cost conscious and will pay the power company rather than generate theit own power.
At this time it is becoming increasingly obvious to most that we must find less polluting ways to generate our power needs. Generating stations fired by oil,gas and coal are heavy polluters. We need to move away from these methods and instead generate clean,green power. Wind power is the most obvious alternative at the present time. The individual consumer can do his part by installing a wind turbine or more than one on his propery.
A home built wind turbine made from auto parts and a few odds and ends is quite inexpensive and one or more of them can generate all or most of the power needed. They can be installed on the roof of a building or on their own free standing tower. It is a misconception that continuous strong winds are needed to generate electricity. Even a light breeze will spin the turbine. Power can be stored in storage batteries till needed for use. Any excess power generated can be sold to the local power company in many areas.
Wind turbine power generation is the best solution available to consumers today. All of us who are concerned about the future of our planet need to get aboard now by building or buying a wind turbine to provide some of our power needs. The most inexpensive way to do this is to build your own turbine.
As education regarding global warming reaches more and more people, wind turbines and wind farms are being used as an alternative to the conventional ways to generate energy. To the benefit of those interested, there are many cities worldwide who are opting to set up wind farms of their own, most on a very large scale instead of just small operations here and there.
Beaver County to Acquire a Wind Farm Soon
Beaver County, CA is a good example of this. Their renewable energy project, for which they have set aside $400 million, includes 150 turbines that stand 200 feet tall and which, combined, will cover an area of 40 square miles. Each turbine will have blades that span a 300 foot diameter and are capable of producing 300 megawatts of power. This project will be built on both private and public lands and will service about 250,000 residences in Southern California. Wind energy, when used as an alternative source of power, is much less expensive than conventional energy.
Although it will be completed within 30 days, the project will create jobs in the area. First Wind LLC, based in San Diego, is the company that initiated the program and they estimate that it will generate 220 jobs during the construction phase. After the construction is complete, jobs will also be available for operation and maintenance of the wind turbines. Another benefit is that improvements should be seen in the economy in that area as the wind farm is expected to affect taxes and other forms of revenue needed for the economy to remain stable.
UK Boasts Largest Turbines
When you see new technology coming out or being developed, the UK is never far behind the leaders. Wind turbines can be found all over the UK, in villages and counties, but the largest one has yet to be unveiled. Its blades will measure 450 feet in diameter (137 meters). Powys is to be the home of these new gigantic wind turbines, 65 in all. Together, they will generate 190 megawatts of power to 100,000 residences in the area.
An interesting aside is that the people of the UK are hoping these turbines will become a potential landmark in their mainland. It is estimated that they will be visible from Snowdonia National Park and the peak of Cadair Idris. The large size of the turbines is also expected to draw a large tourist crowd. The quiet hillsides of Powys may soon be overrun with people wishing to see the turbines that are larger than the ones in Wales which held the previous record.
What are the Benefits of Building Wind Farms?
There are many direct and indirect benefits to the construction of wind farms. Not only will they generate jobs, boost tourism, and improve the economy in the area they service, but they will also allow for an improvement in the natural habitat of wildlife in the areas that the wind turbines will be constructed. Post-construction, wildlife habitats were constructed to aid in improving the natural ecosystem in the area.
