by D.h. Cannon, D.h
A home based business allows you to be your own boss and to make all the decisions about the business. By running your business out of your home, you can enjoy flexible hours, certain tax advantages and not having a daily commute. When you are thinking about starting a business, you have to do some soul searching and planning. A home based business is no different from any other business; there are just different aspects to consider.

When beginning a home based business you will need to do so legally. You will need to decide the form of business you are going to undertake. These forms are a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a corporation. If you are going to use some other name than your own, you will need to register your business name with government agencies. You will also need to obtain a business license. The business will need to be run according to local, state and federal regulations.

The location of your home based business is very important. You will need to consider your house and neighborhood when beginning your business. Zoning laws are different for different areas of town. You will need to research the zoning laws for your neighborhood. The neighborhood will need to be suitable for the type of business you are beginning. You should also consider if your location will work for your business. Clients will need to be able to find your business with a minimum amount of trouble.

Your family and work style should be considered when planning a home based business. If your family is supportive of you in your business venture, working from home is idyllic. A lack of separation between your family and your business can interfere with family activities. It is a good idea to discuss your business with your family while you are still in the planning stages.

Another consideration when working from home is if it will work for you. Your personality and work preferences need to be analyzed while considering a home based business. Isolation and a lack of colleagues are increased with a home based business. Working from home requires self discipline. You have to be able to plan and manage your time. Your work style should include dealing with problems effectively.

An important determining factor in planning a home based business is your own personality. Do you have the qualities to be successful? The traits of a successful businessman or woman include competitiveness, a need to achieve, the desire to take the initiative, perseverance, and self confidence. Enthusiasm is a good work quality but it must be combined with determination to go down the road with success. Other qualities that will be useful in business are discipline, drive, flexibility, and the ability to meet new challenges head on.

The decision to start a home based business should not be a snap decision. It can be satisfying and thrilling owning your own business. Don't let all the decisions scare you from make a choice that will free you from the daily grind. It is possible to have a successful home based business.

Reaching the summits of success is a battle of the mind and it starts with a positive attitude towards all things. Napoleon Hill said it best, "Think and Grow Rich".

HAVE A CLEAR VISION: The more precise your vision of a desired outcome, the higher the likelihood of it coming true. This isn't new age-speak; it's been ascertained that successful people in more than just the world of business, envisage their ambitions with much more clarity compared with others. See what you want and see it clearly, then go out and make it happen.

BE A POWER HOUSE: High achievers are uncompromisingly relentlessness. They never quit. They never let the tough times get them down. They are determined hard workers but more importantly they are determined smart workers. When they're dropping off the pace they become even more determined smart workers. Highly successful people always search for ways to accomplish more, to go beyond the level at which other people are satisfied to stop.

NEVER STOP GROWING: High achievers never settle. They relish their successes and then they get right back in the game. Like an elite athlete, a successful home based business entrepreneur will honor the basics; they are always in spring training looking for ways to improve, to get stronger and to play at a higher level.

The world is full of seminars and books and CDs/DVDs covering all manner of personal growth opportunities and all of them are worth your time.

BRING ON THE COMPETITION: Champions respect their competitors not as enemies, but as catalysts they can leverage to push themselves to a higher level. Competition keeps you sharp; it pushes you to look at yourself and your business plan critically and to keep your focus in the face of life's distractions.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP: Leadership is an earned right. High achievers know that the best leaders bring out the winner in everyone. They seek to serve rather than to be served, to empower success by extending their vision to others.

Your relationships are a lifeline that connects you to your dreams, so care for them as the most important element of your business plan. Core values of respect, courtesy and accountability, when combined, are the key to making sure your lifeline remains strong and keeps you connected. Make sure the mark you leave behind is a thing of beauty.

MAKE A PLAN: Your most valuable business treasure is your time. How you manage it determines your success as a home based business entrepreneur and to make the most of every day you need to prioritize.

Don't allow the minor elements to discourage you, even when the larger issues seem intimidating. Develop work habits that drive toward efficiency and have the discipline to understand the hierarchy of value relative to what must be accomplished.

NEVER MAKE EXCUSES: Stuff happens, that's just part of life. The first step in recovery from any set-back is acknowledgement and the facing of reality.

Learn from your mistakes and those of others. Look upon adversity as an opportunity for growth and change. Hold your head high and get back in the game, knowing that nothing can stop you.

NEVER SETTLE: Good isn't good enough any more. When you take on becoming the best, just being good is not an option. Being good is a seductive enemy because it lures you into a state of complacency. At best, good is a stepping stone toward excellence and excellence is a stepping stone toward becoming the best.

DREAM ON: It takes courage to dream. Dreams are the foundation of high achievement and while dreams alone are not enough, they empower action with purpose and drive.

Are you simply the best? Hopefully your answer is no, not yet. Because there's always a higher level to be attained and outstanding achievers harness the power of these fundamentals to go there.

Choose to be one of them. Choose to honor these basic principles of success. Dream big, work smart, and never say never.
