[I232]Increase Breast Milk Supply
by Art Gib, Art
1. Let the baby nurse as much as he cares to. The more the baby nurses, the more milk your body will produce. It may seem like a hardship for awhile to spend so much time breastfeeding your infant. Yet, soon the milk will increase and you will be able to produce enough milk more efficiently.

2. Do your best to make sure that when your baby sucks, he is nursing at the breast. Pacifiers and thumbs are great for comfort, but when all those emotional needs are supplied away from the breast, nursing takes a back seat. Breast milk supply will increase more rapidly the more suckling the infant does at the breast.

3. Do not try to follow a strict schedule. Your milk supply will have a better chance of keeping up with your baby's demand if he nurses at his own pace and in his own time. The baby's body does not run by the ticks of the clock, and neither does yours.

4. To rev up your milk production, give the baby both breasts. Start with one side and let the baby completely finish there. He will get all the different elements that are in the milk that comes out first and that part which comes out last. When he has finished, offer him the other breast. If he will nurse for awhile, it will improve your milk supply.

5. Try meditation. Stress can influence your body's ability to produce and release an abundant milk supply. Meditation and other calming practices can help you get back on the right track. With an eased mind, your body will respond more effectively to your baby's demands.

6. Do not underestimate the significance of touch. When the baby is lying against you, skin to skin, he nurses more vigorously. Furthermore, your body will respond by producing and releasing more milk for the baby. Any time you can undress the baby to improve skin contact, you will help increase breast milk supply.

7. If you are interested in herbal remedies, there are several you can try to increase breast milk supply. Fennel and fenugreek seeds are well-known remedies for a poor milk supply. Some people have used red raspberry, chamomile, motherwort, and milk thistle as well. While none of these substances are proven to have an effect, many women believe they work well.

Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed your baby in method, substance, and emotional connection. Even if the usual tips do not help, your doctor or nursing specialist might have other suggestions for you to try. In nearly every case, the mother's milk supply can be increased so that it is sufficient to nurture the infant.
