[I272]Inflammation Of The Skin
by Juliet Cohen, Jul
Eczema, allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis are all allergic forms of dermatitis. This causes inflammation of the skin. The allergy is difficult, if not impossible, to trace. Eczema is a very common disease that up to 30% of Americans suffer from and there are a variety of different types of Eczema, although the most common type is atopic eczema. Although scientists and doctors have not identified any one specific cause of the problem, there are a variety of different things that can bring about flare-ups of eczema. It is important that people understand and recognize eczema skin symptoms so they can discuss them with their doctor for a conclusive diagnosis.

Dermatitis is characterised by redness, swelling, heat and itching. The original redness can become blistery with the production of very small pinpoint blisters which break to form a weeping surface which can eventually crust. The end result which may take months to years to develop can be either a thickening of the skin producing a leathery type surface or a scaly surface. Babies with infantile eczema tend to suffer from extreme nappy rash which makes the surfaces weep. This can be aggravated by urine which produces severe irritation and discomfort. Even the tears can produce reddened and weeping cheeks.

The tendency is inherited and the conditions, hayfever, asthma and eczema are often found in the children of one family. Clothing, perhaps wool, and animal hair can often be the triggering influences. Eczema can occur when skin rubs on skin. In the folds of elbows, behind the knees, in the groin, around the neck and on the wrist where clothing rubs on the surface of the skin. In the older child and the adult, emotion can be a factor in making the sufferer more sensitive to other influences and producing recurring attacks of eczema. If you believe that you or your child is suffering from eczema, obtain medical advice. It is a very long term condition in which the treatment will have to worry with the different stages.

Dealing with Eczema Symptoms

There are a variety of different eczema skin symptoms that people experience but one of the most common is an itchy feeling. Usually a rash will appear eventually but it is not uncommon to feel the itch before the rash actually becomes apparent. These rashes are most common on the hands, feet, knees, and face. Other eczema skin symptoms include having skin that becomes dry and scaly in patches and it may look red and irritated or change the color of the skin in the affected area.

If you experience symptoms that you think may be eczema skin symptoms, you should be sure to contact your doctor for an appointment. While eczema is not a life-threatening problem it can be related to other allergies that you may have. Doctors can prescribe topical medications to help you deal with the itch, but many times avoiding things that cause flare-ups can help your eczema skin symptoms to be alleviated without any type of prescription. Even if you feel certain that you are dealing with eczema skin symptoms it is best to get a doctor to give you a final diagnosis to be sure. Skin problems can be symptoms of other diseases so beware of self-diagnosis.
