[H1726]How To Use Gmail
by Chris Simpson, Chr
Gmail is fast becoming the most popular email service in the world. The primary reasons for this are that they provide an ever increasing amount of storage space for your emails and also provide a very easy to use user interface. Since Gmail uses Google's search facilities you are able to locate your emails quickly and easily. If you have already set up a Gmail account you will no doubt want to be able to log in and check your Gmail account wherever you are.

If you have an Apple iPhone, than you are probably wondering how you can integrate your Gmail account within the iPhone to make checking your e-mail as simple as glancing at your phone.

Google has just recently announced that you are able to add a protocol to your iPhone strictly for Gmail accounts. This IMAP application allows Gmail account holders to check their e-mail on any offline e-mail readers, which is perfect for individuals who have an iPhone, and even for those that don't. It is extremely simple to install and run the IMAP application on your iPhone, thus allowing you to seamlessly integrate your iPhone to your Gmail account. The first step to beginning this process is to go to your Gmail account and enable IMAP. You can do this by logging into your Gmail account and then going to Settings. After that click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP, then click "Enable IMAP."

After you have done the above, grab your iPhone and tap Settings, then tap Mail. After you have done so, make sure that you click Add Account. After you have done so, do not click the Gmail option, because this has not been updated to the newest IMAP settings. Instead, click Other. Once you have done so, you will then begin to enter you information. You will start off by entering your Name, and then you will put the Host Name, which is: imap.gmail.com after you have done this enter your full Gmail account address, which includes the @gmail.com at the end of your username.

You will then move to the Outgoing Mail Server, or SMTP. Under the Host Name, you will want to put: smtp.gmail.com then save all of your changes. You have now just set up your IMAP Gmail account, thus allowing you to view all of your Gmail messages, both old and new.

Having the ability to check your email wherever you are in incredibly important in today's world. No matter whether you are a high powered business executive or just somebody that likes to have regular access to their email once you have activated IMAP in your Gmail account and set up your iPhone you can stay in touch with your email contacts wherever you and your iPhone happen to be.

But, for most internet users, the biggest turn off is the fact that you cannot use your own domain name with Gmail. In fact no free webmail service is known to me which provides this facility as on today.

However there is a workaround! You can use the ?cool and fast? interface of Gmail and send/receive mails using your ?professional? email ID using your own domain name.

For that you have to do the following simple steps:

? Grab a domain name. Register it from any leading registrar
? Host the domain on a reliable server
? Create an Email account. Say you created yourname@yourdomainname.com
? Open a Gmail account say yourname@gmail.com
? Now you can set a forwarder in your server to forward all mails coming to yourname@yourdomainname.com to yourname@gmail.com. Thus you are keeping a copy of all incoming emails on your server and sending a copy to your Gmail account so that you can access it from there.
? Now log into your Gmail account. Go to Settings => Accounts. Click on Add another email address. Enter yourname@yourdomainname.com email address there and confirm.
? Now Google will send you a verification email. Since it will be sent to yourname@yourdomainname.com, it will be forwarded to yourname@gmail.com. So you can instantly check that and enter the validation code.
? Once validated, you can again go to Settings => Account and mark this account as your default account.
? Now, whenever you will send an email, it will go from yourname@yourdomainname.com even when you are sending it from your Gmail account. And of course all replies will come to your gmail interface as yourname@yourdomainname.com emails are forwarded there.

Enjoy! The productivity enhancement Gmail offers to you without losing on your brand image.
