Defining your business simply in terms of the products or services it sells puts a blinker on you before you open the doors for business. It is committing the mortal sin of concentrating on what you want to sell rather that on what your customers want to buy.

A business so blandly described lumps itself with all other businesses of a similar type. Nothing will mark it out as being different from its competitors apart from its drabness!

Therefore, to be successful, there are two simple rules:

1. Define your business in terms of what our customers want to buy.

2. Be different from the competition.

Getting the first part right is to understand the reasons why people buy. Getting the second part right is a matter of researching the competition, seeing the threats and opportunities, in order for you to build a business that concentrates on your strengths and minimizes your weaknesses.

So what do customers want? The answer is relatively simple. They buy to satisfy some need or desire. Customers is motivated by the benefits of your products. So concentrate on what the product can do for the customer, rather than what it is.

Selling the benefit or the unique selling proposition is the greatest important to your customers. You need not meet your competition head on, it is very unlikely you will be able to compete in every area, rather as you should endeavour to match your strengths with the wants of a particular group of customers.

For example in my youth entrepreneur business, my USP is experiential learning by having fun. Kids learn about business by doing it, compared to some of my competitors where they teach entrepreneurship by giving lectures.

Do you find yourself getting overwhelmed by all the offers that you are discovering online. There are so many that it is hard to distinguish which ones are good and which ones are bad.

The first expression you will come across is that the business opportunity will be ?simple and easy.? This is a relative expression. If you don't even know how to turn the computer on, it doesn't matter how good the compensation plan is, the opportunity will not be simple and easy.

It is true that many online business are simple to operate. It will however take time to learn how these businesses all work. The business that I operate has automated mail deliver, website hosting, automatic order taking, and automatic customer service. But, it has taken me many years to understand how all this works together.

Before you invest a lot of money into starting an on-line business invest time into learning the business. You can get a complete Internet Marketing education without spending a dime. There are many experts on the Internet that you can learn from. You have many choices. Be wise.

The next expression that you come across is that that ?Anyone Can Do This!?

Sorry - starting a business of any kind is stressful and requires a learning curve. If you are attempting an online business out of desperation or the belief you will make easy money you will face enormous obstacles. On the other hand, if you are truly seeking a business you can learn, work at and make a living from, you will find something online that fits your needs.

Studies of successful business people concur that those who make it have common qualities of persistence, patience and desire. These qualities are essential when trying to start an online business - do you have them?

You are going to encounter many obstacles in starting an on-line business. You have to keep pushing through the obstacles in order to succeed. Buying another marketing course is not going to solve your problems.

The next expression that you will come across is ?turnkey.? It is true, there are amazing programs and sites that can be set up and ready to go for you. The misconception is that you get the business set up and that it is fully automated. This just isn't true. It is going to take some work to learn how to use the software. It is going to take time to learn how to market the opportunity. Many companies don't really provide you with everything that you need.

A lot of sites will say that ?it won't cost you anything.? You absolutely CAN set up an online business with no money, but be prepared that a combination of no money and lack of experience will stifle your efforts immensely.

Most individuals who start or run a business with no money have learned how to make use of the best free techniques through experience. They have paid their dues by trying businesses that cost money. They have spent time in and around their industry or market and they've been able to see where they can cut costs.

If you are prepared to spend a LOT of time researching before starting your business you may be one of the few who does it right the first time. For most people though, expect to pay something towards your online business education before seeing results - you just can't buy experience.

Online business obviously has its share of work involved, but finding the right one has enormous payoffs many people are willing to sacrifice time and money to achieve. Running your own business is satisfying and can give you more time to do what you really want to do in life.

Creating your own online business is something that you can do, but you are going to have break through the learning curve. Start with realistic expectations while you learn. You are going to learn a ton when you get started. There are many great resources to teach you how to create a successful Internet business. Set measurable goals, research, and work hard until you achieve your goals. You can do it - Jesus loves you.
