[H1730]How To Use Maps
by Graham Baylis, Gra

Can you imagine what life would be like if we didn’t have access to maps? It would be very hard indeed to stay in business if you relied solely on customers visiting your premises for your income. How would they ever find you? Obviously you could write a long and detailed description giving directions, but if you didn’t fall asleep in the process, your customer’s probably would when reading them. Also, once you had given the directions, there would be hardly any room left on your leaflet, flyer, brochure or website to describe the wonderful things that you customer can expect when they get there. No doubt you would not stay in business long.

Yes, a world without maps would be a very confusing one. Lots of large buildings such as hospitals, universities and some large businesses rely on maps or site plans to help people navigate around them, thus ensuring that everyone gets to the right place. So not only do we use maps to help us get to our chosen destination, once arrived we are often given more maps or plans to help us get the most out of our visit.

Have you ever stopped to consider the amazing influence that illustrations have on our lives? When children first start to read at school they are given books which contain lots of illustrations and only a few words. This is because the pictures help the child to guess what is going on in the story and gives them clues as to what the words might say. It enables the child to tell the story without necessarily being able to read all of the words. This then gives the child the confidence to start to identify the words and match them to the pictures and this is how they lay the foundations and go on to become fully literate, and all this started with a picture. It is amazing when you think how much power a picture has!

No wonder then that artist’s impressions are a vital tool when selling something that in fact doesn’t exist (for example something which hasn’t actually been made, created or built). They are commonly used on site boards, promotional literature and planning applications. Estate Agents, Architects, Developers and Garden Designers also use artist’s impressions for advertising their products. Without the illustrations, it would be very difficult for them to be in business, as the majority of people like to “try before they buy” and with these particular commodities that is not possible. This again goes to prove how important pictures and illustration are in business.

I hope that this has given you some food for thought, and if you are looking at ways to increase your customer base, you will consider the amazing power that maps and artists impressions can have.

It is sometimes more of fun traveling without any plans. No guides, no tours. You can travel alone and explore new things that come your way. You generally don’t get into the other side of the trip in planned tours. You are safe but without adventures. Some people take exceptions and like to travel just with friends and no guides around them. Maps are essential for such people as they can take the help of the maps and explore the whole place.

You should know how to study Maps before you use them. Maps provided by a clerk at a hotel or your car rental agency may not be of good quality always. A good quality map adds more geographical context to your trip and helps you as a guide for safe travel.

The type of map that you require depends on the type of vacation you have planned.
‘Road Atlas’ will be the best one if you have planned on an extensive driving vacation. The Road Atlas contains vast detailed maps of the entire road network of the country.

If you have planned for intensive driving only in a part a country, it is recommended to buy a high quality folded map of the area. Such maps are known as ‘sectional maps’.
If you have planned to drive through several countries, it is advisable to collect an integrated set of high quality folded and sectional roadmaps known as ‘Touring Maps’.

If you have planned to stay in a city for going for local activities, you can purchase a high quality street map with a focus on tourism. If you, however, have planned for exploring only the tourist areas in a city, tourist information bureaus and hotels will provide you a map that can meet your needs. As such maps are generally printed on thin paper, they have limited durability and hence take two copies of the maps.

If you have planned for biking, hiking or adventuring, it is advisable to buy a set of local topographic maps that are provided by the official mapping agency of that country.
If you have planned to take a cruise, it is recommended that you buy a concise and pocket-sized world atlas that allows you to track your route and the geographical settings. Most cruise lines provide maps of the local ports of most tourist locations.

If you have planned to take a general tour, you may not require a map for navigation. However having a generalized map of the visiting area will be advisable. These types of maps contain both inset map and a country map that cover significant places of interest and major cities, of course in limited detail. Using a map is not only recommended for those traveling by road but also for people traveling by other means such as by air.

Over the last few years, online maps have become more popular as most people surf the Internet and take advantage of online maps for traveling. You can also search for online maps on the net and if you have a laptop during your trip, you can have freely downloadable Google Earth software. You can find excellent travel directions using Google Earth, which provides you with maps of the entire world. You will get 3D maps also apart from conventional two-dimensional maps.
