Hypnosis was derived from the Greek word ?hypnos? meaning sleep. Individuals induced into the hypnotic state display trance-like behavior. This trance-like behavior has been used negatively in science fiction movies and other media. They portray individuals under the hypnotic state as being controlled by a practitioner and is made to do anything they want without the individual's permission. In reality, placing an individual under a trance-like state is merely a psychological condition that makes the individual receptive to suggestions. That is why hypnosis is now being established to form part of a therapeutic healing program to change negative habits and behavior. Hypnosis is now part of the activities of people participating in smoke cessation programs, weight loss programs.
In a recent study conducted by the American Health Magazine, we find evidence of the therapeutic ability of hypnosis. Statistics show that individuals undergoing psychoanalysis have a recovery rate of 38% after 600 sessions. 72% of individuals with behavioral problems found an improvement in their behavior after 22 sessions. There was a 93% recovery rate of individuals undergoing hypnotherapy. Despite these statistics, a large majority of people are still hesitant to accept hypnosis as part of a vital healing process that encompasses all aspects of mental health care.
Compared with traditional talk-therapy or psychoanalysis, hypnosis is more effective and the results are more evident. Since hypnosis is client-centered, the focus of the healing process is to discover the original cause of the individual's problems. This is done through a process called regression. During regression, the unconscious mind goes back and relives the original cause. This is not always pleasant. Individuals with deep-seated anger and negative emotions are bound to display negative behavior even under the trance-like state. Under the hypnotic state, the hypnotherapist helps the individual to process his original feelings in order to achieve healing. The negative emotions are then reprogrammed through positive suggestions and ideas.
The language of the mind is said to be visual. Anything that the eyes see is processed in the mind. Since hypnosis is a special form of communication to the subconscious mind, visual images depicting positive behavior and habits are programmed into the subconscious. The more detailed a mental image is, the faster the subconscious can process the information and create the effect that you want. Once the subconscious mind has accepted the new idea, it will become part of the conscious mind. The individual is thus empowered to live the life they have always wanted.
Remember that even under the hypnotic state, the person is aware of his surroundings. It is foolish to believe that someone is making you do something that you do not want. The role of the hypnotherapist is simply help the individual to connect with the subconscious mind. Upon making the connection, the individual is aware and is in control of the subconscious mind. The individual is then empowered to infuse the subconscious with positive ideas that will aid in the recovery of the individual mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Self hypnosis has been used by a great many people to create real, measurable changes in themselves and their lives. Huge numbers of individuals have utilized the power of self hypnosis to eliminate phobias, control pain, treat physical and psychological symptoms and well as using it to reach their goals. However, a great many other people have never achieved anything worthwhile from its use even though experts say that everyone is hypnotizable! So, the question remains - why doesn't it always work?
Many people fail to get any measurable results from self hypnosis because they are not using it correctly!
The most important aspect to consider when using any self hypnosis program is to know exactly why you are using it. You must be clear on your intentions. Know what you want. Although this may sound elementary and a little condescending really consider it. Do you know precisely, down to the last detail, what you wish to achieve from your self hypnosis program? Or, do you just listen to a generic self hypnosis session and hope for the best?
For example, listening to a self hypnosis recording for more confidence may be a good goal but how do you quantify confidence? Do you want to be confident around other people or potential mates? Do you wish to experience a more confident attitude towards your career? Is it really that you want to be more confident about your abilities and therefore it is your self-esteem that you are wishing to build?
For self hypnosis, like any other self improvement technique, to be effective you must use it with a goal in mind! This self hypnosis goal should be very detailed.
Try writing down a list of things you would like to achieve and then prioritize them. Take your most important desire and turn it into a goal. Write it down. Do it now!
Have you done it?
When you write down a goal you change it from a wish into a statement of intent. With this statement of intent you can program it into your subconscious mind, through self hypnosis, and make it your future reality. This makes your desire real and tangible and no longer a vague wish or dream. By doing this you have just created a powerful self hypnosis goal!
Now that you are clear on what you want and have created your first self hypnosis goal you need to finish this preliminary work before you ever enter a self hypnosis state.
You must now re-write your goal in the present tense as though you already have it. Some people find they exeprience a feeling of discomfort when they word a goal in the present tense because it feels too unreal. If this happens to you just re-word the goal to reflect the fact that it is in the process of happening. Do not tate your goal as though it will come to you in the future! Never state what you do not want or include any of the things that you are trying to eliminate!
Your self hypnosis goal must state your intention positively and only include what you want. "I am debt free" is a bad example, for in order to be debt free you must first think of debt! "I am prosperous and wealthy", is much better as it includes what you do want! "I am no longer uncomfortable in social situations", is bad as you are focusing on your lack of confidence! "I am a highly confident person who is at ease with others in any situation", is much more suitable as it states the positive outcome you are seeking!
The subconscious mind works, not in words, but in pictures. This becomes very apparent during self hypnosis. So whatever you do right at this moment don't think of an elephant! What did you just think of? An elephant! Right?
In order not to think of an elephant your subconscious mind has to produce a picture of an elephant so it knows what you don't want to think about! This is why it's very important to never include what you do not want in your self hypnosis goal!
When you use self hypnosis to re-program your subconscious mind with this goal, the mental pictures you form will be automatically positive due to the wording of your goal. So only use positive, goal-affirming statements! Make them precise and detailed and the pictures your mind creates will be positive, detailed, goal-orientated pictures that your subconscious mind will use as a blueprint for building your future!
