Television acting is a job like any other, and it has its ups and downs. Recent candid talks with April Matson, Matt Dallas and Jaimie Alexander revealed the challenges and quirky troubles they go through while trying to get their work done. All three of them co-star as cast members in the ABC Family network’s science fiction teen drama, Kyle XY. They recounted their unpleasant and uncomfortable experiences on the series, which recently aired its midseason finale the previous week. Both Alexander and Matson had a difficult time on the set due to problems with the wardrobe department, while Dallas had to deal off the set with unusual behavior from hardcore female fans of the show.
April Matson portrays Lori Trager on Kyle XY, and she recalled the problems she had during filming for the seventh episode “Free to be You and Me." Calling the mishap traumatic and highly stressful, she says that it stemmed from the fact that she had to wear a backless shirt for a scene set during a dance. Matson stated that it didn’t occur to her there might be an issue with her bra, so she was wearing special stick-on gel. She says that as she was working together with 50 extras, she was sweating the entire time, and what she was wearing kept sliding down.
On the other hand, Jaimie Alexander had to navigate around the problem of so-called modesty patches. Her character Jessi XX had to appear as if she were nude during a scene in one episode, and Alexander soon learned that the patches weren’t very reliable and didn’t stay in place where they were supposed to. They also didn’t do much for her in the freezing, uncomfortably cold weather they were shooting in. On the other hand, show star Dallas has had a female fan lick him in the ear, and another caress his bellybutton.
Canadian teen actor Jean-Luc Bilodeau is no stranger to character development and evolution.. The 16-year-old native of British Columbia first appeared in the 2004 film Ill Fated, before going on to co-star as Kyle's adoptive brother Josh Trager in the ABC Family's science fiction drama series Kyle XY. He went through no less than three auditions and a number of callbacks for the series before managing to snag the role, and he has stated that the character of Josh has gradually grown and evolved along with him over the course of the show's run so far. The son of Stephen Trager and the brother of Lori, Josh initially feels highly skeptical and suspicious when his psychologist mother Nicole brings home the mysterious Kyle.
Bilodeau has declared that he just played the character the way that he felt was right, and that as the show's writers and storyline took Josh to a number of different places and twists, he was mostly along for the ride. In an interview with Slice of SciFi, he said that the transition was fairly good and easy for him, and that both he and the character continued to evolve together as they grew up and faced similar challenges in life.
He has also stated that he enjoys the chance of playing a role that he is comfortably familiar with, plus being able to have a great relationship with the people that work alongside him. He considers them a second family, which likewise carries into the family dynamic of the show. But on the subject of the show's story direction, he has also said that he's content to leave such decisions in the hands of the writers. He rarely considers having to share ideas with them, though he did get a peek at their discussion boards during a visit and, and he says that he continues to trust fully in their creative process.
