[I456]Internships For College Students
by Rose Ybarra, Ros

Finding an enjoyable internship should be a priority for those wishing to expand their horizons and find new ways of developing themselves as people and job candidates. Simply attending college, going to class and getting good grades is no longer enough to get noticed by potential employers. Students must go the extra mile and find new unique ways of getting experience and getting noticed.

One such way is by finding an internship college students enjoy and will be jealous of. This could mean many things to many different people. Some people enjoy doing the bare minimum and finding those internships that only have their interns filing, getting coffee and really not learning all that much. While this might seem enjoyable, having such a mundane, do-nothing type of job will not benefit the intern much in the long run, or in the short run for that matter. Being able to walk away from your internship with a sense of accomplishment and feel as if you are in a better place, with more knowledge and useful experience is what should be meant by ‘an internship college students enjoy'. The enjoy part comes as an added bonus to the knowledge and real world experience many students gain from these internships. Enjoying what you do should be a vital part of anybody's plans for future careers, as well as current internships and part time jobs while going through college. Being miserable should never be acceptable to those who can help matters. Some students take a big hit and accept that boring, mundane internship that teaches them virtually nothing about business or whichever field they plan to go in, just to put the experience on a resume. While internships look good on resumes, employers still want to see that the student took something worthwhile away from the experience that can contribute to the candidate's own potential contribution to their company.

An internship college students enjoy doing usually means one that gives them added responsibility and freedom in their daily duties. Nobody likes being micromanaged and, in reality, micromanagement often restricts a person's development, as all of their duties and ideas are generated for them and they are given little freedom to think for themselves. Find an internship college that allows you freedom and maybe even gives the interns a chance to make as much money and take as much away from the experience as they put in. Employers will love to see applicants who have had the opportunity to intern with a company that gave them the tools to develop themselves and have even developed their interns by giving them opportunities for tremendous, worthwhile experiences that they have taken advantage of.

So, never settle for an internship when you know you can find a better one that allows for the student to grow and develop into viable businessmen or professionals in whichever field they plan on entering later in their career. The experience will prove itself invaluable, as lessons learned from the internship will help the recent graduate in his or her job hunt, and later, as they embark on the rest of their career.
