[I519]Is Beauty Only Skin Deep
by Mitamins Team, Mit
While your acne might make you think so, the truth is other people rarely notice it if you act confidently and know how to take care of yourself in social situations. Meanwhile, take some expert and psychological advice to control and overcome the worst of your acne problem. With acne treatment to cover your mental state and your physical condition, you will soon be able to get on with the important things in life - socialising and being a successful person in whatever sphere of life you choose. We've asked a skin consultant to answer some recurring questions about controlling acne, and here's what they have come up with:

Acne rules my life

Problem: I've lived with really heavy acne for the last five years since about the age of 12. It stops me enjoying meeting new people. I feel so self-conscious that I don't even like going out even if I am only seeing strangers on the street. Acne has totally ruined my confidence, and I can't see how things can get better. How can I control this acne problem for good? Boy aged 16

Your skin consultant replies: It's essential that you talk to your doctor about an effective acne treatment. If there's no change in two months, get the prescription changed. In the mean time, regain your confidence by understanding that looks really are skin deep. Even if your spots are the first thing people notice, ultimately it's your personality which shines through.

Mum knows best?

Problem: Is my mum right about this one? I am really worried that no matter how often I clean my face, my acne gets worse rather than better. My mum keeps telling me that acne is just a phase, and that I shouldn't bother the doctor for an acne treatment. Is this true? Girl aged 14

Your skin consultant replies: Acne is common among teens because of hormonal changes during puberty. It's also a medical condition, so don't let your mum stand between you and the doctor. Your physician may prescribe antibiotics to fight it, but give the treatment a few weeks to kick in. If your spots don't clear up after two months, then ask for the prescription to be changed. Spots can be sorted, but it's down to you to seek the help you deserve. Your acne problem might not get better over time, as some cases of acne last into adulthood and throughout one's life, but with a proper balance of food and sunshine, you can control your acne symptoms.

A Helping Hand?

Problem: My boyfriend keeps squeezing the spots on my shoulders, but I've heard it makes things worse. I don't mind him doing it, although it hurts, because he says my acne will only clear up if the dirt is removed from my pores. Should I let him carry on, or leave my spots alone? Girl aged 20

Your skin consultant replies: Providing your boyfriend follows the squeezers guide to acne - keeping things clean and avoiding all things swelling and red - then you've found yourself a friend in the fight against acne. Unlike so many people, it's clear he understands that acne does not reflect badly on a person's character. If only there were more like your boyfriend! However, while it's great to be relaxed about the problem with friends, don't be shy about checking in with your GP for professional acne treatment too. You may be able to get rid of the acne altogether with some stronger acne control methods.

Well, until someone comes up with the true "Fountain of Youth," we are stuck with what we have.

The best route to healthy skin is to take care of what you have. Sounds simple, doesn't it? The truth is that your skin takes a beating from the environment every single day. Here are some of our favorite tips for keeping your skin fresh and healthy:

1.Stay hydrated, and drink plenty of water! That doesn't mean soda, caffeine or any other type of liquid even if it is low cal. Soda (even diet soda) has a high concentration of sodium. Sodium retains fluids. You need fluid that will hydrate and flush your body free of toxins. Make sure you are drinking at least 8 glasses a day!

2.Protect your skin from harmful ultra violet (UV) rays. We all love the sun. We love being in it and we love having a beautiful tan. The truth is you can poison yourself with too much sunshine. UV rays cause skin cancer, and if that isn't bad enough, it causes your skin to age faster than it should, contributing to unsightly wrinkles. If you must play in the sun, make certain you are using an adequate sun screen. Don't leave home without it!

3.Apply your sun screen even if you only make a quick trip to the grocery store. Yes, you can get harmful UV rays even while driving your car!

4.When you purchase sun screen, make certain you are buying the right tool for the job. There are different types of UV rays and they don't all affect our skin in the same ways. The time of year also has a bearing on how much damage the sun can do to your skin. Altitude is another important factor. UV rays are more intense at high altitudes. Sunshine alone is not the culprit. You can do just as much damage to your skin (or in some cases even more) on a cloudy day!

5.Don't forget sun screen for your lips. They want to be healthy too!

6.Apply your sunscreen BEFORE going outdoors and allow plenty of time for it to adequately absorb into your skin cells rather than just sitting on top of the skin.

7.Read the labels on skin care products. The truth is that some ingredients may do more harm than good. The more ingredients are listed, the more potential harm they can do to your skin.
