[K8]Kate Voegele A Fine Mess
by Doug Woodall, Dou
I was reading an excellent article today titled "Identity Theft" by Judith Collins at eWeek.com, when it got me to thinking.... I'm in the Anti-Spyware business, and I'm doing a lot of advertising to promote my website, but here I am online and on the phone, giving my personal information to.....who? Strangers basically, Geez!.
The majority of identity thefts occur thru contractors employing people in entry-level jobs that have not been properly screened. Not even Hackers,Phishers or Dumpster Divers account for as many! The ideal location for a Identity stealer would be in a out sourced agency that fails to use adequate screening processes.
I've read many articles lately that state we need stricter guidelines and procedures to insure we have proper security as consumers. A set of universal rules that would be adhered to by all. To even think of the enormous complexity of this project staggers the mind!
So here I am, I want to take a advertisement out at a prestigious magazine that is published in a traditional print paper and online. I may have to deal with people online and on the phone.I give my name, address, phone number, and my credit card number! EGAD, what am I doing?
Then my common sense and education about matters such as these kicks in and I rationalize that these companies would not be in business if they couldn't keep their customers happy. But,accidents happen. So you see my dilemma. I know computer security and Spyware, and the vulnerabilities and strengths when dealing online. Its just a little new to me to trust, when I know the ramifications to me personally if my Identity were to be used for ill-gotten gain.
I know after all these years of being a, OK I admit it, a slightly paranoid online user, that I need to make myself a little vulnerable so I can better succeed in my online business. I've been where the people who contact me asking for help are; a place in their minds of anger, frustration and helplessness.
But then as I said earlier, common sense and education about Spyware wins over and I take a deep breath and go on.
The California Attorney General has a excellent website for Identity Theft at http://caag.state.ca.us/idtheft/

Global warming is an issue that we have created. It is an issue that we can work to resolve. The damage that is already done is irreversible, but we can make changes now to protect the earth's atmosphere in the future. If we reduce the amount of fuel that we burn, by making changes to our lifestyle, we can reduce the amount of damage that is done to the atmosphere.

Saving earth is everyone's responsibility. The damages done to the earth resources have to be slowed-down and eventually stop if we want our children and grand-children to enjoy a healthy outdoor life like we can.

The big polluters have been pointed and rules and regulations to diminish the toxic gas emissions have been put into place. Manufacturers are now targeted to ensure they lower their pollution production.

Although this is a small step in the right direction, more needs to be done to slow down and eventually stop the wastes of our natural resources. Such solutions as walking instead of taking the car for small travels are a good and healthy start. Other measures such as not letting the purified water run aimlessly or better isolation of a house to lower the fuel consumption to heat it are all small steps that have the power to make a difference in the long run.

Detractors love to remind us that global warming is not new ? it has been happening for thousands of years ? it happened before, when humans were not even around, and it will happen again. That does not change the fact that we are responsible for accelerating it this time, and we can undo the damage if we work hard enough. Recently, Time magazine deemed the rapid overall temperature increase to be an emergency condition. Action needs to be taken. Now!

There is much that we as individuals can do to stop global warming. For one thing, we can stop global warming by conserving energy . How can you conserve energy? Just join the office car pool, walk or cycle instead of using your car for short journeys. Use public transport. Fit low energy light bulbs in every room. Turn off appliances when they are not in use, and turn the thermostat down one degree ? you probably won't even notice it, but over time, that one degree difference will amount to a lot of energy saved. Just imagine this. What if every single person made changes like those? The result would be that the savings would be huge.

Another simple way to do your bit is to recycle ? instead of letting rubbish end up in landfill sites, or, worse, be incinerated, if you recycle it you reduce waste, and save on the energy that would have been needed to produce whatever the product was from raw materials.

Also, using eco-friendly fuels and vehicles will help prevent global warming ? at the moment some eco-friendly options are more expensive than standard fuel, but in the long run you will be saving immensely.
