[K9]Katie Melua Toy Collection
by Gen Wright, Gen
How do we know if a toy is considered an antique or vintage toy? There are no fixed regulations or rules that will grant the status of vintage on any toy, but there are some shared characteristics. Antique toys are usually out of production toys. But simply being out of production doesn't make them grant them the antique toy status. Rather, these toys have to be in demand as well. Sometimes, toys are put out of production simply because nobody wants them. So the toy manufacturers stopped manufacturing them. These are not the items that we are looking for. So what would be some desirable traits for an antique toy to possess?

For one, antique toys should be in demand items. For example, toys that are representative of major world events like the Olympics are usually in demand. People want to collect them to commemorate the event, so they do not mind spending large amounts of money for the toy that they want.

Secondly, antique toys should have aged considerably. Nobody can put a definite number as to the number of years that should have gone by for a toy to be considered antique. Yet, it is generally agreed that the older the toy is, and the more well preserved it is, the more valuable it would be. If the toy has some mechanism in it, like an antique clock or a spring loaded toy, it's certainly worth more if it's in good working condition.

And third, the rarer an antique toy is, the more valuable it would be. That is why an antique toy is often worth more if there is proof of the year of manufacture (like certificates or labels). Hard to find toys are often worth more, and collectors would be more than happy to part with something valuable that they own, or pay a lot of money upfront just to get their hands on the items. To these collectors, the value is all perceived. It is not uncommon to see collectors putting in crazy bids for antique toys. There are many reasons why they would do this. Some want the toys badly because it brings back fond memories and there is sentimental value. Others bid because they want that toy to complete their toy collection.

But once in a while, some bidder will bid because he thinks that in time to come, the antique toy will become a worthwhile investment. Yes, there are people who collect antique toys for investment purposes. They treat their toy collection like a business. So what happens is that when acquiring toys, they treat every purchase as an investment. And although they eventually become sellers, they are also buyers since they also compete with others to acquire the toys.

If you are looking to find valuable antique toys to add to your collection, then you should start thinking like these collectors. Ask about the number of toys that were manufactured. The lesser the number, the better, since this means limited supply. Also, do a little bit of homework to ascertain the market demand. Are there many people who want to keep these toys, and why?

These are some of the things that we've mentioned earlier in the article. Remember, the value of the antique toy will be, by and large, dependent on the supply and demand. So keep these pointers in mind when searching for your next valuable vintage toy to add to your collection.
