[K18]Keep The Heat In
by Max Johnson, Max
Working outdoors in the cold weather can be quite harsh, but that doesn't mean you should make it harsh on your employees too. In fact, it is your responsibility to protect your employees with all the protection and comfort at work that you can. That means, you must invest in some the proper clothing and apparel for your employees. That will keep them happy and more productive for your business.

There are many brands that specialize in making cold weather work uniforms and even flame resistant uniforms. Carhartt, Red Kap, Wrangler, Walls are all world leaders in making working apparel. They all ahve a very impressive range of coats and jackets, coveralls, bib overalls and hoods, most of which are also available in flame resistant wear. These coats, jackets, shirts and pants are not just workable for the snowy times, but they can also be used during the rainy periods with equal effectiveness.

The cold weather work uniforms are made with a nylon layer on the outside that helps to ward off the snowflakes and the water droplets that fall on the clothes. At the same time, nylon, being a non-conductive material, keeps the cold outside and retains warmth in the body. For added protection, the clothes are given a finish of a material like polyurethane.

The cold weather is excellently kept out by the effects that are given to some of these coats and jackets. Some of them have a layered or ribbed finish on them which will make the snow and the water just slide off the coats. And the coats are not that heavy too, since it is the outer design that makes them weatherproof. All the clothing is fastened with plastic zippers that help to protect the chest from cold draughts and ensure complete winter protection. Flame Resistant apparel uses non sparking zippers to remove the threat of zippers making a spark against any other objects.

Another important part of the apparel is the hoods, which are meant to snap comfortably onto the collars of the winter coats and can be fastened in place with straps that come over the chin. Hoods are made in one standard size, so you would not go wrong, whichever hood size you would select.

Among the leading cold weather flame resistant wear are the coveralls and the bib overalls. Apart from being resistant for fire, these coveralls and overalls also provide great cold weather protection. They provide for great utility too, with big pockets in the chest and rear, and places to keep in the tools. They come with waistbands too. For the cold weather flame resistant clothing, there are leg zippers that can be used to hold the clothes in place over the legs. All fastenings like zippers and buttons are made of fire-resistant material, or Velcro fasteners are used.

For many people, the cold winters can be almost unbearable. If you home isn't staying warm during cold weather periods it can be awful and uncomfortable. Increased energy costs make it prohibitive for people to merely turn up the heat, but the other alternative, to suffer through isn't a better solution. There actually are other solutions. Your home may either be inefficiently producing heat or it may be inadequately insulated, allowing heat to escape. With simple changes, keeping your house toasty and warm may be easier than you think.

There are ways to keep the house toasty and warm. If despite having the heat cranked up the house seems chilly, it could possibly be owing to air leaks that are letting the heat out and the cold in. The basic check to carry out is a visit to each room to see if any of them is colder than the other. If some room is colder than other, then you need to check around any doors that lead to the outside as well as the windows in the room.

If you do have a draft there are several things you can do to fix it and luckily none of them cost very much money. Rope caulk is a great way to seal up windows. It's very inexpensive and anyone can apply it. If the draft is coming from underneath a door try getting door sweeps which are also very economical.

Another inlet for cold air is the chimney. A chimney that is open all winter long allows heat to escape and cold air into the house. If drafts are not caused by doors and windows then the chimney could be the culprit. A precaution to take is to close up the chimney when the fireplace is not in use. This small precaution can make an immediate difference to heat retention.

The sun is a free source of heat energy. With cooking and heating implements in the market that are run on solar power - why should we not use this great source to heat the home. Therefore, if the sun is shining open up curtains to let it in and see the amount of heat that is generated by such a simple thing.

If you are concerned about rising energy costs but want a toasty warm house all the same, purchase a programmable thermostat. These inventions are pure genius. You can automatically set it to lower at night when you're swaddled in blankets. Then set it to rise before you awake. This way you can get up to a nice cozy house, and still save a bundle on your heating bill. This makes the cost of the new thermostat well worth it.

If you have an unfinished basement, that too can be a source of heat loss. Despite being isolated from the house, the basement may lose heat through the unprotected water heater that is placed there. The heater is working inefficiently when it looses heat even before it gets to the house. It may be losing heat before it even gets into the rest of your house. The solution would be an inexpensive outer casing to protect this heat loss.

Having tried all this, if the house continues to be cold, then it is time to get the insulation checked. An expert can check if the insulation is doing its job. Looking around and shopping for different contractors could get you a good deal that does not cost the roof. Good insulation is instrumental in keeping the house warm and results in reduced heating costs.

The way to beat spiraling energy bills and yet keep the house warm is by taking a few precautionary steps that do not cost a whale lot of money and yet are effective.
