The first consideration is the convenience getting to the end result. There's no question that a dentist is interested in your overall dental care. Therefore they are more likely to focus on healthy, usable teeth and less on esthetics. If you think about it, this is actually a good thing.
Understand that the quality of the teeth whitening however is very comparable. The dentist typically will use much stronger whitener gels to achieve faster results. They may also use a laser or blue light which when used with "special" gel is claimed to work even faster. Speed however is not the reason why you're considering getting your teeth whitened, it's for a brighter smile.
The dentist will achieve results faster but they also need a formal appointment which makes the dental method less convenient.
The next important point of interest is the ability to whiten or what the final result will look like. Here, both the home teeth whitening solutions and the dentist both do an excellent job. The difference is that although the dentist may get faster results, there is a risk of your teeth becoming sensitive to temperature extremes due to the aggressive nature of the dental whitening materials used.
Another point is the need for occasional maintenance treatments. The benefit here definitely goes to the home whiteners because you can treat your teeth anytime you feel they are starting to get a little stained or dull. The dentist method will require another appointment and treatment at their office.
Finally there's the overall cost. A high quality home teeth whitening product can be obtained for under 150 dollars. This is typically more than enough to whitening and brighten your smile in less than a couple of weeks. The dental method typically can cost several hundred up to as much as 800 dollars for the initial treatment without considering the expense of the maintenance treatments that will be needed.
Bottom line is that if you have strong and healthy teeth, using a home whitening solution can save you money and deliver the same bright smile and unstained teeth as the dentist. In the end, home whitening is both an economical, safe and convenient way to whiten all your teeth and bring back that youthful smile.
The majority of people, including acting professionals, aspiring models, political figures, and businessmen, covet bright smiles accented by even white teeth. A majority of people even believe that good smiles will help them make friends, get good jobs, and even have successful dating experiences. Because of this, cosmetic dentists are experiencing a high degree of financial success.
Most people, however, are either unwilling or unable to afford the significant expensive of having their teeth whitened by a cosmetic dentist. Much more affordable products can be purchased that can be used in the comfort of one's own home. The prices for these home teeth whitening products range from $20 to $300. Persons with lower incomes, however, may find this to be a very costly price. These individuals, together with persons who just don't want to spend exorbitant amounts for cosmetic dentistry, may choose to take advantage of products that are commonly found in the home that also whiten teeth significantly.
Making a teeth whitening gel at home can be done with basic household ingredients. First, hydrogen peroxide, available in three percent solutions from the local pharmacy, also whitens teeth. This, in fact, is the same chemical compound that is used in commercial teeth whiteners. (The gel sold in most whitening kits, however, contains about 22 percent peroxide, and so results may not occur as quickly.) Hydrogen peroxide kills germs and removes surface stains.
Another common ingredient that can be used to create a teeth whitening compound at home is sodium bicarbonate. This compound, most commonly known as baking soda, also kills germs, removes surface stains, and neutralizes acids.
Another product that can be used is glycerin, which can be bought in grocery stores, pharmacies, and health food shops. This vegetable oil causes bacteria to stop moving around. Because these germs must move to remain alive, this product hastens their death. Unscented Neutrogena soap achieves exactly the same results as glycerin.
To create a home whitening gel using these ingredients, add a few drops of glycerin to a small amount of baking soda (about one teaspoon). Continue to add glycerin until the paste is thoroughly moistened without becoming runny. Add about two tablespoonfuls of hydrogen peroxide to a glass of drinking water.
Rinse a toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide and scrub the bristles gently over the Neutrogena soap. Apply a small amount of the paste created from baking soda, and brush your teeth thoroughly with it. Rinse the toothbrush as needed with hydrogen peroxide. After brushing completely, rinse well and gargle several times with the peroxide-water compound.
Brushing one's teeth in this manner twice daily will help to decrease the risk of gum disease and other bacterial problems in the mouth. It will also lighten the teeth by several shades over a period of time. It may not work as quickly as commercial whitening kits or dental treatments, but it is much less costly and at least as healthy for the teeth and gums in the long term.
