Flutter your Earth Day world flags on April 22, 2009! Earth Day is one of two observances, both held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere. These are intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. The United Nations fly their Earth Day international flags on the March equinox, a tradition which was founded by John McConnell in 1969. A second Earth Day, which was founded by U.S Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 is celebrated in many countries each year. In the U.S, Earth Day solid color flags are flown on April 22.

Celebrating and promoting environmental awareness is important to Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon will ask kids to unplug their games and gadgets for a minute to symbolize a commitment in helping the environment. The unplugged minute will come at nine o'clock in the evening on April 22 and it doesn't extend to television sets but is largely targeted at household lights, hand-held games and cell phones. Nickelodeon will post suggestions on its Web site.

The cable network is also honoring Leonardo DiCaprio with its first-ever ?Big Green Help Award? on its annual Kids? choice Awards on Saturday. Nickelodeon said it chose DiCaprio because of the actor's promotion of environmental issues including his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. Cameron Diaz will present the award to DiCaprio.
