There are many reasons that people perform pubic hair removal today. Some do it as a religious custom. Others do it as a cosmetic detail, and some think it is cleaner than letting the pubic hair grow naturally. There are some functions that pubic hair does have, however. It is a visual sign of sexual maturity, it can collect and hold pheromones, it reduces friction on that area during sexual intercourse, and it actually does provide some warmth for the area as well.

Throughout time, pubic hair and pubic hair removal has been a subject in which opinions have changed. In Japanese drawings, pubic hair was often omitted in the past because the display of pubic hair was illegal. The law has changed in modern times, however. In Islamic societies, pubic hair removal is done as a religious practice. In some Middle Eastern and eastern European cultures, pubic hair is considered unclean, and for good hygiene women have done pubic hair removal for centuries.

Pubic hair removal in many cultures today has become a custom practice. Some of the reasons that are common for pubic hair removal include for fashion reasons, tradition and religious reasons, sexual practice, such as for oral sex, to improve tactile sensation and appearance, for hygienic reasons, and to relieve any discomfort, such as with itchiness or heat.

Even though the practice of pubic hair removal is common these days, it is still fairly uncommon for pubic hair to be dyed or colored. Nevertheless, there are dyes and colors that are specifically made for the purpose of dying the pubic hair, and the colors range from natural ones to match the hair on their heads to bright, unnatural colors.

Some people also do pubic hair removal as a statement about their personal tastes. There are tools, lotions, and other products that are available these days to aid in pubic hair removal. Not only that, there are stencils that are on the market to help with creating little shapes and patterns. Some of the most popular styles of pubic hair removal include the triangle, the landing strip, the Chaplin mustache, the fauxhawk, the Mohawk, and the Brazilian waxing.

The landing strip is a long centered vertical rectangle about a quarter of an inch from side to side. The Chaplin mustache is a short, square version of the landing strip, and the fauxhawk is when the pubic hair is styled like a Mohawk without pubic hair removal. The Mohawk is pubic hair removal on the left and right sides, leaving the middle to be spiked. Many people also have fun with pubic hair removal by using stencils to create shapes like hearts, stars, and others.

Threading

This is an extremely delicate method of removing hair. It is mainly used for eyebrows and facial hair. Basically, threading calls for each hair to be individually and manually removed by a tightened thread. Hence, it is not only quite painful but time-consuming as well.

Laser hair removal

For individuals with sensitive skin, or skin prone to ingrown hairs, the use of laser hair removal method is excellent as the process minimizes the risk of unsightly bumps when supervised by expert therapists. After every laser session, laser-ed hair will grow sparser and thinner, hence making it less likely to cause problems upon removal. But not many people are into laser hair removal because it is relatively very expensive compared to all other methods of hair removal. But with improved technology, a growing worldwide demand, and fierce competition, prices have gone down substantially over the years.

Depilatory cream

This option is effective when done correctly. But more often than not, this method will end up very messy and might leave sensitive skins stinging. A downside of depilatory creams is that the results do not last - at best it is only good for a few days. But on the plus side, it is a less expensive option compared to many other hair removal alternatives.

Shaving

Probably the most well known method of hair removal. It is cheap, easy to use, and a very quick way to remove unwanted hair. But results only last one or two days. Women should take note that they should never use razors to remove facial hair as regrowth tends to occur rapidly.

Epilating devices

These pull out the hairs from the root, hence giving a long-lasting solution. But epilating is painful, though this often lessens over time as the body adapts to the pain level. Another problem with using these devices concerns getting rid of coarse hairs. When pulled, these hairs tend to break rather than come out cleanly.

Sugaring

To some individuals, this method of hair removal is gentler on the skin than waxing, as warmed sugar only sticks to the hairs, rather than the skin. But sugaring is not a do-it-yourself method. It should be performed by a skilled practitioner.

Electrolysis

This hair removal method uses low-level electrical currents to destroy the hair follicle, which translates to mean that the hair no longer grows. Depending on where you get it done, it can be quite expensive and time-consuming. Hence, it is not recommended for large areas.
