News is a strange thing. Until a couple of weeks ago I had never heard the term "hockey mom" or even heard of a Large Hadron Collider, but it can, apparently, reveal the secrets of the universe. When driving to school the other day my son asked "Is this the day the world ends?" Don't let your mind become a black hole of excuses.
I could tell he was hoping we really would all be engulfed by a black hole emanating from a Swiss mountainside, which would lead to the intriguing result that Switzerland had produced the cuckoo clock, lots of secretive but extremely boring bankers, and the end of the planet. In his mind this would give him several days of a hedonistic teenage existence, unlimited computer and internet access accompanied by industrial quantities of sweets and fizzy drinks. After all, if the world is going to end, why be restrained.
That's why teenagers have mothers - to stop them being totally stupid.
Without the license to behave irresponsibly he kept on doing his homework, eating sensible food, and living a reasonably restrained life. But this story illustrates how tempting it is to do crazy stuff when there's the possibility that we might not be held accountable.
Isn't that often the way with weight loss?
* Sneak that extra cookie because no one is looking.
* Have the chips rather than the salad because it's Friday (and Saturday and Sunday).
* Eat the extra slice of cake you made otherwise it'll go stale.
We pretend that these actions are justified. One extra cookie won't count. I'll have that bar of chocolate at the weekend. It's not good to waste food. But what we are really doing is not being accountable. Not being accountable to your loved ones, your slimming club, or your nutritionist. But above all not being accountable to yourself.
The world will not end with the Large Hadron Collider. (I can say that with confidence because if the world does end you won't be reading this newsletter.) My son has no excuse for not doing his homework because, however much he hopes for it, his maths teacher is not going to disappear into a black hole.
And you have no excuse for not eating well because however much you hope for it, excess calories will always turn into fat.
It's easy to think "I'll start the diet tomorrow" or "One cookie won't hurt" or "Nobody will know if I have this snack".
But don't let your mind become a black hole of excuses. Don't let your digestive system become a black hole for food - engulfing everything it encounters. Don't let a Swiss chocolate mountain end up on your hips.
Tell yourself - "The world will not end tomorrow but I'll still have this excess fat. I will make choices today so I can be slim tomorrow".
And happy (and healthy) eating.
The biggest problem with overweight people is too much talk. They are aware that their size poses a problem, and they decide to address it a million times over. Six months later, they are still deciding to do something about it, but have taken no steps. This is why they get to remain the way they are. Don't be like them if you are serious about losing weight.
All you need to make good money these days is to write a book on losing weight and get a celebrity to corroborate your stories. The book will sell like wildfire through a dried up jungle. It says a lot about what Americans hold dear.
Chronic illness can also cause you to lose weight. As a matter of fact, I know of a guy who, understanding that he was prone to a certain feverish relapse every other month, he would eat himself to substantial fat prior to that. Months later, when he fell ill, he would lose all that weight in a couple of days. Cute idea, but don't try it at home.
You can lose weight by hypnosis. The hypnotist sits you down and programs you to eat less and exercise more, and you find yourself being able to do it. Previously you might have found it very difficult or even impossible, but it's possible.
More people prefer to undergo liposuction instead of gastric bypass surgery to help them lose unneeded weight. The reason is because with liposuction you are less likely to have a mishap while going through the process. With the bypass, a lot more dexterity is needed, and try hard as they might, some people are still uncomfortable with that.
Overweight kids need the help their friends and parents to lose weight. More than even adults, they are subjected to untold rejection by mates and peers in the classroom and they need that acceptance. However, you as the parent must help them understand that losing weight is for their own selves, and not so much for what other people in their schools think.
Your own body metabolism, your rate of food digestion and energy consumption patterns, is different from that of the other person. This is why your weight loss regimen does not have to be the same. You should consult a specialist who will guide you through the process that is best suited for your own body when you are about to begin your own weight loss program.
It goes without saying that losing weight is all about exercise, exercise, exercise. Without exercise, you are wasting a lot of time, unless you have opted for surgery, in which case, you might still be needing that exercise later on down the line.
