[I504]Ireland A Short History
by Steve Porter, Ste
Darts has been around for a very long time. Originally thought to have originated in England as a game for those longbow archers. Apparently they would throw their arrows at the base of a beer barrel for practice and it went from there. Even Henry the Eighth is said to have had a set of darts or "arrows". The soldiers even took their barrel bottoms with them or improvised a slice of tree as a "dart board". So the first boards were made of wood.

The game progressed and the dart became smaller and the game of darts became a big hit in local pubs around Britain, with lots of different rules and variations depending on what area of the country you were in. Indeed "Manchester dart boards are still used in some areas of Manchester they are smaller and often referred to as a "log end" dart board.

Just about everything that came to America is attributed to the Mayflower voyage. It is even said that darts was played on the Mayflower on the way to Ameriica. They caught on after the pilgrims arrived and played them whenever they could find the time. Here they remained until the British Empire's great expansion caused them to become more popular and then they were played constantly. However, there is evidence that the Indians had a form of this game long before the white men came to America.

In the eighties the game was televised and of course the sponsors (cigarette and beer companies by and large) weighed in and the sport got a much needed injection of cash. When John Lowe threw the first televised 9-Dart game, this greatly helped to publicize the Sport. It caused a sensation at the time, not just because of the feat itself, but for the enormous amount of money he made by doing it. A sponsor had put up ?100,000 ($175,000 at the time) for anyone that could do it. That was John's biggest payday at the time (1984)

Then came the war of the darters in the 1990's and the game split into 2 camps, the BDO and the brand new PDC, the Professional Darts Corporation who promised, and have largely achieved, to take darts truly International and have staged tournaments all over the world, hence the Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

The old bulky Brass Darts have now largely been superseded by the Tungsten dart, as tungsten is denser than brass, the darts can be made smaller and especially thinner, which make close groupings (hopefully in the treble 20 ring) easier.

And the Dart boards? They have also come on leaps and bounds especially in the last few years. Electronics have arrived; the wooden dart board gave way to the bristle dart board (which still gives the most satisfying thud when the dart hits the board in my opinion), which now is giving way to the electronic dart board. These new boards are simply technological marvels; they keep score for you (a great boon in Cricket) and can be programmed to heckle you when you throw, so you feel like you are back in the bar and the new Halex electronic board even marks out the throw line with a LASER! How cool is that, we've come a long way from log ends Eh!

Finally, in 2005 UK Sport officially recognised darts as a Sport and International recognition soon followed. The image is also now being cleaned up, gone are the beer glasses and cigarettes, and especially in the PDC tournaments, the guys have really cleaned up their act. Gosh, it is even rumoured the game could be a demo sport for the Olympics! What would those "Archers" of England who started it all, have thought of the game now.

-- In 1928 the family company House of Stathopoulo officially becomes the Epiphone Banjo Co. The banjos were lauded as amongst the finest sold. Around this time Epiphone began to produce a line of guitars mostly with carved tops.

-- 1931 saw the production of 12 F-Hole modeled Arched Top Guitars. The De Luxe and Triumph models were the mainstay of production for the next 40 years. Prosperous times ignited Epiphone throughout the Thirties. Gibson and Epiphone were constantly engaged in battles of wit and supremacy.

-- The 1935 Epiphone Super and Wide Emperor and the adjustable - pole pickup of 1937 were both significant milestones.

-- Epi Stahopoulo dies in 1943. History tells us his two brothers Orphie and Frixo were now managing the company. Hard times reigned as the post war years forced Epiphone to reduce their range. By the mid-fifties the upright Base and the Harry Volpe student was their bread and butter, keeping the name alive.

-- 1957 was a significant milestone in Epiphones history. Gibson's parent company Chicago Musical Instrument buys Epiphone for $20,000. Epiphone is soon a division of Gibson and the guitar name is revived. A year later the Epiphone production is moved to Gibson's Michigan factory.

-- The Beatles excite Epiphone with a marketing cue as George, John and Paul purchase Casino's. The sixties buyer jumped on the bandwagon and sales soured. Epiphone became cool and hip.

-- Japan provided new opportunities for Epiphone. The success of Japanese made guitars, quality, function and price were dominating markets in the US. 1970 saw Epiphone move its operation to Japan, establishing a presence in Asia that continues to this day.

-- The 80's fostered further changes. Epiphone again moved, this time to South Korea as costs in Japan were increasing. In 1986 Gibson and Epiphone were sold to a Henry Juszkiewicz, David Berryman and Gary Zebrowski. Some of the traditional lines were reintroduced.

-- During the 90's Gibson recognized deficiencies within their Korean Subsidiary. A stronger infrastructure, technical and communicative initiatives were installed in Seoul. A little bit of US Gibson in each Epiphone Guitar, not only a vision but a marketing reality.

-- October 2002 the China Factory opened in Qingdao. It was an ideal partnership i.e Gibson, Epiphone technical know-how and experience add the Chinese production efficiencies and Epiphone became very affordable.

-- Chinese Epiphones are highly regarded. How do they compare with Gibson? Many would argue there is little difference and the price disparity is not justified. Well that's another story...
